The current-generation Subaru Outback has been on sale locally now for over two years, with sales continuing to pick up.
The Outback has been among the top-selling large SUVs for a while now, though it’s unlike the other top sellers in its segment as it’s not a body-on-frame seven-seat SUV. It’s instead a lifted wagon of sorts riding on a unibody platform.
Both the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne were initially developed in a joint partnership. As such, they share similar architectures and engine options. Yet, in the past few years, the divide between the two has grown wider.
The VW Touareg, for example, is more spacious with added shoulder and rear legroom. It’s equipped with better standard technology, like the Driver Assistance package.
The success of the new-generation Ford Ranger is forcing other dual-cab ute makers to step up their game in a big way.And while Toyota commands the top position in the sales charts month-to-month with the HiLux, it’s easy to rest on your laurels.
Given Toyota’s history of doing just enough with some of their products to get by, it kind of took us by surprise when Toyota announced a significantly revamped HiLux Rogue.
Toyota has overnight revealed its tougher-looking and more powerful flagship HiLux, due here this year. The Toyota HiLux GR Sport has what the brand calls a Dakar-inspired design, and will be the most powerful diesel HiLux it has ever offered locally.
The GR Sport continues to use a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine like most HiLux models, but with power and torque boosted by 10% to 165kW and 550Nm respectively. Toyota says the extra grunt comes courtesy of revised turbo-supercharging and fuel injection control.
Every brand needs a flagship. Volkswagen dabbled in the rarefied air occupied by the S-Class with the Phaeton, and it flirted with supercars through concepts like the Nardo, but it’s settled on the Touareg as its halo car.
Now into its third generation, the Volkswagen Touareg has morphed into a rival for the BMW X5 and Audi Q7, and a standard setter for the Volkswagen brand.
