Tonight, there are unconfirmed reports coming out of Moore County, NC of three substations being shot up with firearms simultaneously to cut power to a drag show. Reportedly, nearly 40,000 people in Moore County are currently without power.
Emily Rainey, a former Army officer who resigned after the Army launched an investigation into her participation in the Jan. 6th attack, posted this about the power outage.
In a follow-up post, Rainey tagged Sunrise Theater, where the drag show was being held, and wrote “God will not be mocked” above what appears to be a photo of the building tonight during the power outage.
This person posted a tweet appearing to endorse the firearms attack on the substations, then edited the tweet to remove an approving hashtag.
I’m worried for residents of Moore County who rely on life-sustaining medical equipment and just had the power go out. This attack has immediately put lives in danger, to say nothing of the campaign of terror being waged against LGBTQ people.
Here’s Rainey’s update on being visited by the Moore County Sheriff’s Office after her post referencing the attack.
There are now unconfirmed reports of looting at a Walmart and a local gun store.
Statement from Moore County Sheriff’s Office
Update from Moore County Sheriff’s Office on presser scheduled today for 4pm.
Further context: this was not marketed as an “all ages” drag show. A local resident emailed me the graphics describing the event. It clearly states only 18+ will be permitted and nowhere does it contradict that.
Another resident of Moore County sent this video and said:

“People trying to leave Moore County. US1 at tramway. Traffic is at a standstill everywhere leaving MoCo.”

A thread on local impacts during the power outage from a resident:
Presser by the Moore County Sheriff's Office is about to start. You can watch the FB livestream here: facebook.com/MCSheriffOffice
Moore County Sheriff Rob Fields confirms the department is working with the FBI and other state and local law enforcement agencies regarding this incident.
Sheriff Fields stated he's never seen anything like this in his 40+ years law enforcement career.
Fields announces a mandatory curfew starting at 9pm and ending at 5am and that law enforcement officials are working to apprehend the perpetrators.
Moore County Sports Complex will be open as a shelter for local residents and all EMS personnel are working as scheduled.
A representative from Duke Energy now speaking. He says during initial investigation, it was determined there was intentional damage on the substations. Equipment will need to be replaced, "a pretty sophisticated repair with large equipment." Repairs could take until Thursday.
Superintendent now speaking. Schools could be closed past Monday and call will be made, day by day, depending on safety issues and how fast repairs can be made.
Reporter asked Sheriff Fields to address how this is related to the drag show (the reporter incorrectly claimed it was a storytime event; children were not permitted at the event). Sheriff Fields refuses to confirm there was a connection while it's being investigated.
Fields does confirm TWO--not three--substations were incapacitated by firearms. He claims no individuals or groups have taken responsibility for the attack. He emphasizes federal law enforcement are investigating an avenue of domestic terrorism but does not confirm it as such.
It's hard to tell if Fields is refusing to confirm further obvious details out of respect for the federal investigation, but it's a bit exasperating there's not a federal law enforcement official to respond to these questions.
A Facebook group called Moore County Citizens for Freedom posted this on Nov. 18th. I've blacked out all the contact information for sponsors of the drag show, but the group urges followers: "You know what to do."

No mention of this at the press conference.
"We had to go interview this young lady and have a word of prayer with her. But it turned out to be false", Sheriff Fields respond to reporter re: Emily Rainey's FB post claiming to know why this happened.

Reporter asks how it was verified.

Fields: "Good law enforcement."
Presser just ended.

Look, again, I don't know if Fields is being intentionally cagey about further details out of respect for the federal investigation, but he has failed to satisfy some common sense questions about Rainey's claimed knowledge of the attack. Not a great response.
And respectfully, I'm also not terribly impressed with the lack of focus from local reporters on Rainey's claims posted on Facebook. She literally tagged Sunrise Theater and wrote "God will not be mocked."

There were no specific questions from reporters about this.
My apologies for the long thread today. I've tried my best to summarize all this into a handy explainer for what happened last night in Moore County and what's to come. charlotteclymer.substack.com/p/when-the-lig…
"About 33,554 homes and businesses were without power as of 1:54 p.m. Monday, according to data from the website poweroutage.us. That’s down from 40,638 at the peak of the blackout on Saturday evening."

The possible railroad strike is being ludicrously framed by much of political media. So, in case you're confused by all this, here's the nutshell. (thread)
This isn't about pay for conductors and engineers. It's about sick leave. You know how most jobs have a certain allotment of short-term sick days for employees? These railroad employees don't have that. They have to use their vacation days, which they have to request IN ADVANCE.
Do you know if you're going to catch a cold next week? Can you be absolutely certain? Neither can these employees, but they're currently required to be fortune tellers and then request vacation time for unanticipated sickness. Makes absolutely no damn sense.

Social conservatives have been completely wrong on every LGBTQ rights issue. Let's review... (thread)
When they said the decriminalization of homosexuality would destroy society, they were wrong.
When they said allowing LGBTQ adults to serve as public school teachers would be inappropriate because children would be vulnerable to sexual abuse, they were wrong.

"Elf" was released 19 years ago and has aged very, very well.
“YOU DID IT! CONGRATS!”

I know it’s coming, and I still laugh every single damn time.
"You sit on a throne of lies!"

This whole exchange is so good. We're rooting for Buddy, who is objectively in the wrong, and yet, the Fake Santa seems a bit like an asshole despite firmly being the most rational adult here and looking out for the kids.

There it is. Ronaldo becomes the first man to score in five different World Cups.
Ronaldo is the first man but not the first person. Both Marta and Christine Sinclair already did it (and in the same five World Cups).
There are now men in my mentions insisting that it wasn't a real penalty and he doesn't deserve the goal, as though I give two shits.

I agree we're in dangerous times, but for the record, although it's not my place to speak for those affected by antisemitism, I can confidently say that LGBTQ advocates, especially trans advocates, were warning about this acceleration years ago.

And we were ignored. Repeatedly.
This did not happen overnight, and I will admit that I am more than a little frustrated with influential straight and cis folks in media who, apparently, didn't think this hatred merited substantial attention. That we were being dramatic. We were not. And here we are.
Vicious and vile anti-LGBTQ hatred is not "being re-mainstreamed". It's been here for a while. It never really went away. But same-sex marriage was legalized, and suddenly, in the minds of influential non-LGBTQ figures, that was supposed to fix everything else.

It did not.

The first time I presented publicly out-of-the-closet was at a queer spot in town, here in Washington, D.C.

(thread)
In fact, it was Town itself -- "Town Danceboutique" in its formal name, as it was known to out-of-town newbies. My first night out as my true self was seven months before it closed.
That space made it easier for me to tip-toe into public life as my authentic self. It was a safe space to fill my own skin at a time when I was genuinely terrified of what lay ahead for me, even in a moment that was joyful for the long-savored liberation it offered.
