🧵 Emmanuel Macron just laid bare his objective with his offensive on the #IRA in recent interviews. He wants a new 🇪🇺 European stimulus package.

Macron: “We can’t ask the United States of America to solve our problems.” 1/3
Something he’s been pushing since *checks notes* early March 2022. ⤵️

Didn’t work the first time? In pure Macron fashion, he’ll keep pushing. 2/

Why? Because it’s an opportunity for him to “synchronize” both his foreign (European sovereignty) and domestic agenda.

Domestically, he wants to counterbalance unpopular social benefits cuts and pension reform with growth and investment in strategic areas. 3/3
“In fact, there are voices in the EU urging it down a similar path. In an essay in September, Thierry Breton, the E.U.’s internal market commissioner, wrote of the “determination and audacity” of the Biden initiatives by way of encouraging Europe to pursue comparable methods.” 🔽

🧵 Several issues with this thread which assumes France & Germany have powers they don’t have by conveniently omitting the failures of other allies. 1/
For starters, I know it’s tempting for some unscrupulous hawks to rewrite history but a majority of Ukrainians opposed NATO membership until 2014.

And so far, the US has said nothing about Ukraine’s formal application late September this year. 3/

🧵 Criticisms regarding France’s Ukraine/Russia policies tend to focus solely on President Macron’s remarks but France is way more than just Macron.

Let’s talk about this latest Russian propaganda piece in a major French news outlet. ⤵️ 1/

One aspect that is often overlooked is French media reporting on the war, which is highly problematic.

Unlike Anglophone media outlets, French outlets have routinely interviewed Russian government officials over the past 9 months. 2/
The spokesperson of the Russian embassy in France, Alexander Makogonov, is regularly invited on French TV.

See for example on France’s biggest cable news channel, BFM TV, just this week. 3/

1/ Late to this, but glad to see the Macron documentary broadcast late June finally gets the attention it rightfully deserves. This documentary is pure gold. A thread. 🧵
2/ Initially a documentary about the French Presidency of the European Council from Jan to Jun 2022, it morphed into something else as the war unfolded. We got raw footages of Macron’s reactions in the weeks before and after the war.
3/ Disclaimer: the subtitles ARE NOT perfect but we have to thank this YouTuber.

If you’re in France, it’s still available on FTV platform: mobile.france.tv/documentaires/…
