This does not include all of the sexual abuse of children that has never been reported, and this does not include all of the sexual abuse of children that has been covered up by pastors, staff, elders, and congregants. This isn't just sexual abuse, this is also spiritual abuse.
Important to note: This is not unique to churches in Texas, this type of abuse happens in every state in America. This is also not unique to a specific denomination or particularly theology ― this type of abuse happens throughout the Christian Church in America.
🧵The far right in Texas is obsessed with “groomers” and "child predators." Are they looking in the right places?
This year in Texas, several pastors or staffers of Christian churches have been arrested, charged, or convicted for various allegations of sexual abuse of children:
In Temple, Texas: "At least six local pastors and teachers were named among the hundreds of Baptist leaders accused or found guilty of sexual abuse of children" kcentv.com/article/news/c…
Jonathan Ryan Ensey "a pastor’s son and Conroe church worship leader was sentenced to prison... convicted of victimizing a congregant by committing indecency with a child and online solicitation of a minor." yourconroenews.com/neighborhood/m…
.@mycheesemonster offered up a critique that's worthy of reading. She was not the first person to identify the site call for action, but her Tweet received by far the most engagement.
So, let's take a look at the first voices to identify the site to report drag shows:
.@Lynda555E's article appears to be one of the first mentions of the group and the website. However, the article is behind a paywall, and was never promoted by @RawStory: rawstory.com/raw-investigat…
.@SamusMcQueen's article for @them, which I cited in my newsletter, was published a few days later, and received significant more engagement, both on Twitter both also on Reddit: them.us/story/drag-ale…
A Texas-based anti-LGBTIQ group created an online tool for reported drag shows, and in response activists flooded the tool with enough reports to apparently crash the site. However, as of this morning, the site is again live:
The antisemitic bromance comedy you didn’t know you didn’t want to see. One still lives with his mom. One is a used car salesman. One loves Hitler. This Christmas, only in theaters.
