Given how prominent Wikipedia pages are in search results, private companies are very invested in working with these core editors to manicure their digital image and influence their very visible portrayal by a seemingly “objective” 3rd party.
But it’s not just the corporate sector that wants to sanitize their image.
Prominent individuals or even entire countries have been found dumping vast resources into Wikipedia washing strategies.
Despite recent revelations, it would be a mistake to see Wikipedia as a once neutral endeavor that has only recently been corrupted.
Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia’s founder, cites Ayn Rand’s ‘The Fountainhead’, an ode to anti-communist fanfiction, as a major influence on his politics.
It’s thus unsurprising that Wikipedia’s guide to source trustworthiness gives full grades to NED cutouts like Bellingcat and RFA, but deems independent journalism critical of US empire, like Venezuelanalysis, Telesur, The Electronic Intifada, and The Grayzone as untrustworthy.
But it’s not just Wales.
Wikipedia’s CEO from 2016-2021 was Katherine Maher, a regime change superstar who boasts a resume adorned with stints at the World Bank and CIA regime change fronts like the National Democratic Institute (NDI).
Prior to joining on as Wikipedia’s CEO during her time at the World Bank, Maher even traveled to the Turkish-Syrian border right at the initial peak of western efforts to topple Assad.
Hilariously enough, even people who know Maher on a personal level believe she’s somehow affiliated with the CIA.
In truth, the CIA has so dispersed their role of coordinating regime change activities through a variety of orgs in recent decades that ideologues like Maher may actually be oblivious to her full role, having become so soaked in brine she has no idea she’s become a pickle.
Whatever Wikipedia’s purpose at the outset may have been, whether noble or not, is now completely irrelevant to what it has become:
an unassuming means of smuggling US-approved ideology worldwide under the guise of an unbiased and open encyclopedia for all.
Addendum: This may go without saying, but Wikipedia does not, and likely never has needed your money.
There, it runs into other finance capital doing the same. In order to avoid a race to the bottom, the competing owners of finance capital agree to a temporary truce and carve up the world into a patchwork of monopoly territories.
But eventually, this too runs its course and the more dominant owners of finance capital subsume the weaker territories until there is but one imperialist world system dominated by a single country.
This is why Lenin called imperialism “the highest stage of capitalism”
China’s eradication of ETIM terrorism within Xinjiang shifted the staging ground for western-backed destabilization of the BRI—the largest infrastructure project in history—to Central Asia.
Ignoring this context will have you cheering on the next color revolution.
These protests were then capitalized on by western-backed terrorist squads that went around beheading state security forces and demanding the current government be overthrown, a goal obedient western vassals like the UK were more than happy to help with.
It’s simple to reconcile once you stop seeing Ukraine as a smol bean fighting Big Bad Russia and start seeing it for what it is — a US-backed proxy used to:
1- destroy Russia and
2- sever Europe from Asia by forcing them into permanent reliance on the US for energy & defence.
The US is using tariffs to force Canada and Mexico into stopping alleged cross border flows of fentanyl.
One view is that this signals the US genuinely wants to protect its population from fentanyl.
But another is that the US wants to become the global supplier of fentanyl. 🧵
After the US invaded Afghanistan in 2001, Afghanistan’s poppy fields went from a minor portion of global opium production to supplying the vast majority of the world’s consumption.
When the US finally left in mid 2021 and the Taliban retook control, opium production plummeted.
But while opium requires copious labor and vast fields of poppies to generate a significant yield, enough synthetic opioids to supply entire countries can be produced in a single lab by a few chemists.
It’d be hard to imagine a better drug for raising dark money.
