Today we released our fourth annual survey of hate and harassment in online games.
I’ll be frank: the results are awful. Things are not getting better.
We need more from the industry. civil society. government.
Or this is just going to continue.
Thread below. (1/7)
We’ve used a fairly conservative methodology for determining exposure to white supremacy in online games after our first survey in 2019.
Even using that same methodology, we’re seeing exposure to white supremacist ideologies go from 8% last year to 20% this year. awful. (2/7)
For the fourth year in a row, harassment has not decreased: 86% of adults experienced harassment in online games and 77% experienced severe harassment which including a stalking, physical threats, sexual harassment among other behaviors: public.flourish.studio/visualisation/…
(3/7)
The trends among young people are the same: an increase to 66% from 60% of young people 13-17.
We asked preteens for the first time this year (10-12 years old). 70% of them experienced harassment.
Last year the game where people experienced harassment the most topped out at 79% of adult gamers experiencing harassment there.
This year the five games with the most harassment have over 80% of adult gamers experiencing harassment: public.flourish.studio/visualisation/…
(5/7)
This is having and will have a huge impact on the industry. The number of players quitting games because of harassment continues to increase even as the players who say harassment has no impact on their experience decreases.

The full report is here and it is bad news, folks. Industry, among others, needs to step up.
If folks are interested in this and in joining the team working on this kind of research and advocacy in gaming and whatever comes next, we are hiring: careers-adl.icims.com/jobs/2005/gami…
