Katelyn Haruko Schmisseur was 16 when she first arrived at a wilderness therapy program in Utah. Her parents sent her there after she began drinking and sneaking out. She also struggled with bulimia.
Because of her eating disorder, a staff member was with her at all times, even while she used the outdoor bathroom.
“I was terrified,” Katelyn, now 21, recalls.
In the United States, there are about 40 wilderness therapy programs with anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 children currently enrolled, says Bobby Cook, executive director of @BreakingCodeSi3, a nonprofit that advocates against the troubled teen industry.
