Brendan ONeill asks: Are we reaching peak climate lunacy? "The madness of the greens is peaking. This week a leading eco-politician in the UK, @CarolineLucas of the Green Party, referred to the building of a new coalmine as a ‘crime against humanity’." spiked-online.com/2022/12/09/are…
All this alarm is over the fact that after seven years of the practical case against the #whitehaven mine being evaluated it has finally endorsed. The mine will not 1.
#Whitehaven mine will not add to co2 or subtract from UK emissions targets as it is coal for steel which will replace existing imported coal 2.
#Whitehaven mine will not add the equivalent of 200,000 cars. This is a made up statistic 3.
#Whitehaven mine WILL provide 500 direct jobs (there have already been several thousand applications) 4.
#Whitehaven mine WILL provide 1500 ancillary jobs in an area which 16th in the UK for deprivation 5.
#Whitehaven mine is not in an area of outstanding beauty. It will clean up the site that was previously a chemical works 6.
#Whitehaven mine has agreed over 200 environmental stipulations 7.
#Whitehaven mine will provide a social levy to local organisations for every ton of coal extracted. 8.
Green jobs have been promised for decades. If steel is needed for wind turbines and bicycles then the #whitehaven jobs are green jobs. Recycling and washing out jam jars are the alternative, as far as I can see. 9.
