🧵I. How the old Twitter failed the fight against children's sexual exploitation content (sigh) and more
II. While I'm working as an independent researcher along Twitter's Trust and Safety team led by Ms. @ellagirwin and passionate managers like Jarrod Doherty, I want to share some information and updates with you all. So, here we go 👇
III. Twitter is continuing its operations against accounts that publish child sexual abuse material. As I said,Twitter focused on Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking users in the past days. Reduced over 90% the impact of these malicious accounts that used specific KWs and #
IV. Furthermore, Twitter is working on the following:
a. report form. As @elizableu suggested, it will be easier and faster to report CSAM with clear reporting options.
b. ban evasion. The Twitter engineering team is working to detect users that try to bypass account suspension
V.
c. Continuous updating and monitoring of suspected hashtags and KWs.
d. Strengthening of cooperation with law enforcement.
e. Listening to users' ideas and feedback.
f. Operations against suspected networks that share CSAM.
About f. read the following tweets
VI. The more we work on child sexual abuse material on Twitter, the more we find the HELL left by the old Twitter management. What I'm going to tell you now is INSANE.
VII. We found several accounts that shared CSAM, including videos of children and teens involved in sexual activities. >95% of these accounts were created before Elon Musk bought Twitter. Some of these accounts have been active for years (even since 2017).
VIII.
These accounts that shared CSAM acted with impunity for years. The contents of these accounts obtained over ten million views on Twitter. Yes, 10.000.000 views. They won't get any new views because Twitter has now taken down all these accounts.
IX. I found that old Twitter, in many cases related to child sexual abuse material published on the platform by malicious users, instead of suspending the whole account, just removed the tweet. Now Twitter, under Elon Musk's leadership, directly suspends the accounts.
X. @elonmusk is constantly updated about the progress. Two days ago, he authorized additional measures to fight child abuse on the platform. Old management had other priorities, but for the new Twitter, children's safety is #1
The mass media will little understand the impact of what Elon Musk and Tesla presented today, but the effect on the automotive sector and the environment will be enormous. Tesla is taking care of our Earth as nobody else
2/ Vengono dall'Africa centrale.
🧵70 years ago today, ENI (Nat.Hydrocarbons Board) was funded. His chairman Mattei has been one of the most outstanding European entrepreneurs of the 1900s. But as ENI became one of the wrld energy leaders and posed a threat to the French and other foreign interests', Mattei died
/2 Enrico Mattei knew energy independence was vital for a country's development. So he started to build refinery plants in Italy, but more importantly, he started a new kind of relationship with the north African countries.
/3 The French always had a colonial approach. Instead,Mattei created a respectful relationship with many north African countries "We're partners. We divide profits into equal parts" North African countries loved Mattei and developed a special relationship with Italy. 🇫🇷 was raged
🧵I. Updates about fighting against child sexual exploitation content on Twitter.
II. During these weeks, I worked as an independent researcher along Twitter's Trust and Safety team led by expert Ms. Ella Irwin. Twitter achieved some relevant results I want to share with you:
III. Twitter updated its mechanism to detect content related to child sexual abuse/exploitation material. Faster, more efficient, and more aggressive. No mercy for those who are involved in these illegal activities.
🧵Don't be fooled about the noise of the news that shareholders have approved the takeover bid of Elon Musk (no surprise!). The real news is what Twitter whistleblower Peiter Zatko, affirmed today in front of the US Senate Judiciary Committee
/2 Peter Zatko described a culture of the management that continuously misled the board and investors. Zatko affirmed that inside the leadership there was a push that dissuaded employees from reporting negative information
/3 Peiter Zatko said that he found foreign agents inside Twitter then he informed an exec of the threat and was told "What does it matter if we have more [foreign agents]?" -- THAT'S CRAZY!
🧵This spam acc that compulsively shares and puts likes on porn content is considered an mDAU (monetizable daily active user) by Twitter
But it is not alone. We estimate that false, spam or automated accs could represent 12-14% of current mDAU
It's a long thread, let's start 👇🏻
/2 Twitter doesn't share info about mDAU. Nor its metrics and methodology.
Twitter defines mDAU as accounts that are logged in and can see ads. Usually, researchers have different ways to analyze accs, but no one seems to help estimate mDAU except one…
3/ We ran sponsored campaigns.
As the objective of our sponsored campaigns, we picked engagement. Twitter charges when people we target engage with our content. Impressions that don’t generate an engagement are free. We decided to run five campaigns for less than 24 hours.
