At this point, I think I’m done producing content for this malevolent thug who is using his power and platform to target violence at others.
This thread captures it well. Just as FloridaOrban said Fauci should be “chucked across the Potomac,” Musk knows he just required Fauci to have even more security protection against the right’s growing ranks of stochastic terrorists.
For the next few days any social media activity I engage in will happen on Mastodon and Post. I’m also locking this account so that only my current followers can see it.
I know that me leaving Twitter will have exactly zero impact on Elon's bottom line or the future survival of this place, just as my not shopping at Wal-Mart has had zero impact on that company. I take this action because it sickens me to be complicit with what is happening here.
I have reservations about ceding this very important public space to Elon, his army of sycophantic right wing propagandists, and the scattered band of conspiracy-obsessed stochastic terrorists who serve as their thuggish (but at arms length) enforcement mechanism.
Elon has his head so far up his own ass (and is surrounded by so many yes men bros who consider themselves "free thinkers") that I just can't see this mad king changing course and making Twitter less politically and ethically toxic on his own accord.
I'm also done counting on the "good intentions" of huge corporations who some had hoped would refuse to do business with a thuggish authoritarian and enabler of stochastic terrorism like Musk. It would be great if they would do that, but I'm not expecting much from them.
I most certainly do NOT want to see forceful government oversight of a platform like this. Perhaps it would work to hold Twitter legally accountable for harms caused by the violent hate groups that Twitter knows full well gather their forces here. But that's not happening soon.
As with many things in a democratic society, it's mostly humans with a sense of decency & shame, and a respect for informal norms of generosity, kindness, equity, and inclusion that can make big institutions like Twitter function as promoters rather than destroyers of democracy.
Elon as Chief Twit has revealed himself to be a magnet that attracts only the most angry, hateful, small-minded, and anti-democratic figures to him...he doesn't just attract them, he fires them up much as Trump fired up the previously demoralized bigots scattered across the US.
It's possible that global social media technology & democracy are just fundamentally opposed to each other. If that's the case, then I choose to side w/ democracy. I still have hope that they're NOT incompatible, but Twitter just feels like a democracy-destroying machine rn.
If I was a cynical propagandist like many of the people with whom Elon has engaged in jovial banter since taking over the company, I would try to get the hashtag #twexit going.

Thread on what Elon has been doing recently with his power and his platform.
He’s basically going “Libs of Tik Tok” on a former Twitter employee on the basis of zero evidence, siccing a bunch of angry Q conspiracy nuts on him.
This’ll be great for his ability to recruit workers for his company in the future I’m sure. “Don’t mess up, or I’ll encourage a bunch of tin foil hat wearing vigilantes to show up at your house.”

For folks who were alive in the 1980s or 1990s, whenever you hear a politician like Ron DeSantis refer to "woke gender ideology" just swap in the old phrase "homosexual agenda" and you'll get a clear picture of what he's up to.

Here's an article from 2003 that marshals most of the same themes that today's "groomer" and "pedophile" discourse does. It was written by a grassroots far right activist in Oregon who'd been active since the 80s and kept a file on "the gay agenda." newswithviews.com/Betty/Freauf31…

This was my first experiment with Twitter spaces. It was weird, but an interesting way to spend time on a Friday night I guess. One thing I learned was that you should have multiple hosts so someone can vet people who ask to speak.
For example, this Nazi a-hole showed up at the end spouting BS about the Jewish conspiracy. Had someone just taken 10 seconds to look at his timeline it would have been an easy decision not to turn the mic over to him.
I also spent a lot of time going back and forth with someone whose TL is filled with Candace Owens memes and anti-vaxx stuff and other brain worm material. I probably would have cut my losses more quickly had I known who I was talking to.

Elon's Twitter is a bit like if a high school turned over the school newspaper to the school's TPUSA chapter and the Ayn Rand Objectivists club and gave them access to all of the students' records and teachers' emails.
"Guys, you're never going to believe it, but it appears as if the teachers and administrators are part of a Soros-funded Antifa plot to use cultural Marxism to brainwash us into furthering their Communist agenda."
"We now have definitive proof that the free lunch program is a Democrat-run operation designed to keep young people of color on the Democrat plantation, thereby making it nearly impossible for Republicans to win elections in the future!"

The person ET is talking with is a "prophet" who has recently said that John Roberts would be tried for treason, that Prince Charles would murder Queen Elizabeth, that Obama is the anti-Christ, that Joe Biden is not really alive, and that Donald Trump “is the real president."
On the very normal world view of ET's friend Julie Green. rollingstone.com/politics/polit…
Anyway, remember that one time Obama had a fundraiser at the house of a guy who 30 years earlier had been involved with the Weather Underground, and the right lost its mind?
