Tonight in my daughters ward I met a mum who had to get her unconscious limp baby to A&E on the bus because an ambulance was going to be 6 hours. By the time they got there his oxygen sat was 69% and he now has brain damage and seizures. She had to take her limp baby on the bus.
We regularly spend time on paediatric wards and have done before during and after the pandemic. I also run a care provider for the elderly. Nurses and paramedics are seriously underpaid compared to equally skilled professions - and a damn sight more valuable than most.
Over the last 10 years I have seen first hand ambulance waits spiral and community and hospital nurse numbers and experience level fall through the floor. I know many people who have been directly harmed as a result including the baby lying opposite my daughter tonight.
The Tories have systematically, deliberately and ideologically done this to our universal healthcare. The nurses strike is to protect us all. They are the hardworking families, they are us and the ones that are there for us. #RCN
