Francisco Macias Nguema, the insane and brutal dictator who reduced the population of his country by 75% in 10 years Image
Macias as he was known by, was born in a small village in Spanish Guinea in 1924, his father was a witchdoctor who was murdered and his mother commit suicide. Image
He wanted a job in the government, but failed the civil service exam three times, nonetheless he was able to secure a job as a translator in a 1961 delegation to Franco's government in Madrid. Image
Back in Guinea he climbed in power quickly as a corrupt courtroom translator where he would lie in his translations to cause trials to swing one way or another. He eventually served as mayor of his hometown. It was around this time his mental instability started to show
In another delegation to Spain discussing the independence of Guinea, Macias became unhinged and went on a long rant about how Hitler's real goal was to liberate Africa from colonial powers and the war in Europe was an accident
His rise continued, but before running in the 1968 election for president of the newly independent nation, he went back to Madrid. Fearing that he was mentally unstable and insane he got a psychological evaluation. He was insane. Later that year he won the election Image
Once elected Macias began running a fairly standard autocratic regime, imprisoning and executing critics and solidifying his claim as dictator for life. After another secret trip to Spain for psychiatric help, Macias started behaving erratically, even for a dictator
This list of his strange behaviors is not in chronological order.
Macias did not want anyone leave Guinea so he mined the one road out of the country and banned the use of boats which stopped all fishing and lead to famine. Image
His paranoia of spies and traitors turned his army into a death squad that would murder entire villages if one person was accused of a crime. Most of his top advisors were murdered by him as well, usually through defenestration
Courts did exist, but defense teams were notorious for incriminating the suspects and recommending the death penalty to the judges
Macias banned the word "intellectual" and had everyone who wore glasses rounded up and executed. He also banned the wearing of shoes
He went on a stiff anti Spanish anti Catholic purge, making both punishable by death. He banned medicine. He Africanized his own name and cut ties with most other nations, except for North Korea, where he stayed great friends with Kim Il Sung
His wife and children were sent to live in North Korea and one of his Daughters lived there for many years. She eventually moved to South Korea and lives there to this day, insisting Korean culture is her native culture Image
On Christmas one year early in his reign, he had a few hundred political prisoners brought to the national soccer stadium where his soldiers wearing Santa hats gunned them down while "Those Were the Days" by Mary Hopkins played from the loudspeakers
Macias grew afraid of the capital and moved to a compound in his home town. When he left the city, he turned off the power plants and said he would use magic to power the country
On his compound he had a personal prison and part of his daily routine was personally executing prisoners. He performed blood magic learned from his father on his victims and reports say he was high on a cocktail of hallucinogenic drugs this entire time
He kept all the skulls of the people he killed and would use the skulls to beat more people to death. In his house he was known to reject his advisors so he could have meetings with ghosts and ghouls
Macias had a God complex and even made the motto of Equatorial Guinea "There is no other God than Macias Nguema". He had the chief of the Central Bank murdered and moved the country's entire reserves to his house, where he burned most of it Image
Ten years into his rule, the country had basically stopped working. What people were left were starving and Macias was overthrown by his nephew. He was executed at the infamous Black Beach Prison in 1979, by a group of Moroccan mercenaries as locals were too scared to shoot him Image
Before his rule the population of Guinea was somewhere over 200,000. Over 100,000 people fled the country despite the roads being mined and between 40-80 thousand were murdered by his regime. Equatorial Guinea has still not recovered from his reign
Thank you for reading, I know this thread was dark. There have been many mass murderers in history, but I highlighted Macias for how bizarre his actions were, some have dubbed him the "witchdoctor president". It is important to remember he was democratically elected.

The Bo people and other tribes of the Great Andaman Islands and the sad slow death of a language Image
The Andaman Islands are an archipelago in the Indian Ocean and are one of the most remote places on earth. They are famous today for North Sentinel Island which is home to one of the last uncontacted tribes, but the other islands were home to many other tribes Image
The first reference to the islands by a civilization was by the Chinese in the middle ages who had their trade ships get blown towards the islands. They never really established contact with the violent natives as the islands were seen as a useless

Civilized humans have long understood the value of leisure and it is a true marker of a patrician to appreciate and partake in its finest forms.
What better way to relax than an Opium Den?
(don't do this)
A brief history of Opium. (note I will only be talking about the more unrefined types, not the modern uses that plague society) Opium comes from the seeds of the poppy plant and contains chemicals that when consumed correctly induce euphoria, and pain reduction.
Traces of poppy are found in human burials going back over 7000 years to the Neolithic age across Europe all the way to the Indian sub continent. It is likely our ancestors were well aware of the pharmacological properties of the seeds.

Shrunken Heads, also known as Tsantsas, how are they made, who makes them and why and how did they become an international curiosity?
Read to find out
So how exactly is a head shrunken? (DO NOT TRY AT HOME) For starters you need a head, specifically just the skin. Headhunters would pull the skull and flesh away from the skin carefully to preserve the face and hair. The eyelids were sewn shut and a wooden pegs sealed the mouth
This fresh face skin was then boiled in a brew of plants high in tannins for 15/30 minutes. This was very particular as too much boiling could ruin the skin and too little would not preserve it. (This is where the experience of the head shrinker comes in)

A thread on Jeremy Wade, angler, adventurer, biologist, anthropologist, and yes TV Show host. Many of you have likely seen episodes of River Monsters, but the show is only one part of this man's Ahab-esque obsession of bringing the beasts of folklore into the light.
Jeremy started fishing at a young age like so many of us, but his mind was pulled out of the streams of rural England into the torrents of the Amazon, Congo and other mighty rivers by books describing the denizens of their dark waters
He studied biology and worked as a teacher saving every bit of cash he could to fund his own pursuits of angling adventure. In the early 80s as a 26 year old he made his first fishing trip to India, where he stayed for three months chasing a beautiful carp known as a Mahseer

This is my photo of some petroglyphs at a site called Gobustan, about 30 miles outside Baku, Azerbaijan. Our guide told us that this site on the Caspian Sea is where Vikings originated from. Why did he claim this? A Thread Image
Gobustan is a desert mountain near the Caspian, with thousands of petroglyphs ranging as far back as 20,000 years ago. Most of the petroglyphs show expected cultural elements, people, large fauna (see this bull carving), sea creatures, etc Image
There are two kinds of carvings that stick out though. One is a Roman inscription from the First Century AD and the second are these longboats. (not my photo) They both caught the eye of a man who led one of the most daring maritime adventures of the 20th century Image

A thread on Michael Palmieri. While mostly unknown he is one of the greatest living adventurers. A tribal art merchant, he made his fortune exploring the island of Borneo and befriending the local headhunters.
Michael grew up in Southern California in the 60s and as a young man was a charismatic, but normal surf bum. When he got drafted for Vietnam he fled to Mexico and then hopped on to a freighter which took him to Europe where he would spend the next 10 years
He was quite successful in Europe and while never really being tied down, explored the continent along with large portions of the Middle East. One of his most lucrative jobs was smuggling the jewelry of Afghan nobility into Europe for safe storage
