Incredibly annoying that people now use “NIMBY” to mean anyone who isn’t in favour of the full deregulation of the development sector. Especially annoying because dealing with actual NIMBYs (aka people who oppose supportive housing being built in their area) is part of my job!
I generally avoid posting about housing policy, because I know that doing so will attract some of the most annoying guys on the planet to my mentions. But I really can’t stand well-off tech workers acting like they’re the ones getting fucked over the most re: the housing crisis.
It is a fucking Sisyphean task to get a supportive housing project built for the people who really, desperately need it. People are freezing to death and ODing in bathrooms out here and many people are happy to let that continue so they don’t have to live near a social service.
That’s what a “NIMBY” actually is, and they are a very real problem and a contributing factor to the ongoing mass death occurring around us. But sure, let’s redefine the word to be a derogatory term for anyone who gives a shit about the social impacts of gentrification.
Hard to not see this whole debate as a generational conflict between wealthy white “new economy” tech workers who want to live in GoogleCity and their wealthy white suburbanite homeowner parents that the rest of us are all just subjected to while more and more people die
