ICYMI: Last week, the @ProgIntl inaugurated a new global process toward a New International Economic Order fit for the 21st century.

My role is modest, but I'm proud to play a part in this urgently needed initiative. Watch the #NIEO launch event here:
50 years ago, the nations of the Third World came together in a moment of crisis to envision a radical restructuring of the global economy: a NIEO

In the midst of our own crisis, we ask: what should a new NIEO look like, and how do we make it a reality?
The event was kicked off by @davidrkadler, who invoked the celebrated Salvador Allende 1972 UN General Assembly speech, delivered mere blocks away, 50 years ago that very week.

How — David asked — do we understand the legacy of the NIEO, and revitalize its vision today? Image
Dr. Vasuki Nesiah reflected on the NIEO as embodying "a nationalism embedded in tricontinental internationalism... optimistic about the possibilities of collective action to transform the institutional arrangements of international society and legislate towards alternate futures" Image
"In the spirit of Bandung, I would like to talk about the world anew," continued @ecuarauz. "We need to find a space for nonalignment, but not just a boring and dull nonalignment" — "a decolonial, demilitaristic, nationally sovereign and regionally integrated nonalignment." Image
Among Arauz's proposals for "collective but unilateral action from the South" were:
— Ending ISDS
— Terminating investment treaties
— Reclaiming central banks
— Forming regional moneys
— Creating a "Wikileaks for climate tech"
— Moving @UN to the Global South
& much more
Professor @MonaAli_NY_US warned of the forces arrayed against such a project — most notably, the weaponization of global finance and the US dollar, particularly via sanctions. Image
UN Permanent Representative of Bolivia @DiegoPary — and his counterparts from 🇨🇺,🇻🇪,🇭🇳, & more — spoke of their nations' experiences forging alternative, sovereign development paths, and the struggle to survive the backlash that these projects provoked from the imperial core. Image
Joining by video, @Jayati1609 declared that "the existing structures of multilateralism are simply not working." "There has never been a more important time" to build toward "a new multilateralism" and a "genuinely progressive alternative." Image
These are just a few of the many wonderful leaders and scholars who took part in last week's event — for whom we're very grateful.

But this initiative is not just a one-time collection of nice speeches — it's the beginning of a multi-year, multilateral process toward a new NIEO.
We are thrilled to share that this process continues next month with a "Congress on the New International Economic Order" in Havana, Cuba 🇨🇺 as the country prepares to take over the G77 presidency.

With eyes on 🇻🇪, here are 5 key takeaways from the Post's recent exposé of US sanctions policy.

(1) Venezuela's sanctions-fueled crisis was the largest peacetime economic contraction in modern history. Image
(2) Over 7 million people left Venezuela since the crisis began. From a country of ~30 million. Image
(3) @frrodriguezc estimates that half the contraction was from sanctions.

Here's a figure from an article he and I wrote last year showing how each instance of sanctions escalation was an inflection point in oil output decline. Image

NEW: The UN General Assembly adopts "Towards a New International Economic Order" by a vote of 123-50.

The results speak for themselves: Image
These regular resolutions recommitting to the #NIEO are a sign of the continued power of that vision.

But nearly 50 years on, routine votes are not enough — it's time to revitalize the spirit of the NIEO, and build a movement toward its realization.

The @OECD is expected to announce today that ~140 countries have reached an agreement on a new global corporate tax deal.

The world tax system is unjust. But this won't fix it. The OECD process has been led BY rich countries, FOR rich countries. (1/7)
rte.ie/news/2021/1008…
The plan has 2 pillars. The 1st makes companies pay more taxes where they actually do their business, rather than where they claim their profits... BUT it only applies to 100 companies, sets a low rate, & requires countries to get rid of their existing digital service taxes (2/7)
Under Pillar One, many lower-income countries will end up with LESS in tax revenue than before the deal. (3/7)
