Seeing #artstation protest gave me new motivation, so I will try my best to make ultimate thread of AI criticism, from my perspective, but also showcasing carefully collected artists' voices and research 🧵

@AFinnstark I will try to cover all issues and go into more broad humanist perspective, so if you would like shorter summary, head there ⬇️
@AFinnstark Unimportance

I find this as the most general issue with AI art, as this will hit everyone.
Try to visualise one of the moments in your life which you hold dear. Spot the smallest details you remembered.
Would you be able to do it with your day-to-day life?
@AFinnstark We live in a world, where there's a lot of art. What makes it truly special, despite such entropy?
For artists - their process
For others - the unknown
It is always something you find randomly, not what you generate from your need, which gives it soul, touches you by being "you"
@AFinnstark Existence of AI in public multiplies daily content, to the point you may ignore it, it will be just next "mobile app game ad"
What you generate can be "wow" effect for a while, but eventually will get boring, as it is not your need being pleased making you enjoy it, but surprise
@AFinnstark Meanwhile, for this short "wow" effect (and potential art apathy later), you support the movement which already impacts a lot of creators. Smaller ones are losing their comissions due to use of AI, bigger ones are told to make more work as editors instead:
@AFinnstark Not only that - as most of you may already know, AI IS THEFT. It does not only work on database made from artists who never agreed on that, but also allows for blatant copying of either database original art, or the style, making it drop its worth.
@AFinnstark Often there's argument that artists learn the same way. This is false, as human perception is blurred and its imperfection is actually what puts so much soul in art. More:

@AFinnstark Another argument which is taken, is that it is a tool, or that it is just another "photography" revolution.
This is again false, as photography never depended on paintings, and their field was separate. AI content hops directly into the same field as artspace it tries to mimic.
@AFinnstark AI is not a tool, and it is not the same as drawing tablets, Photoshop, procedural generation, at all
Tool use is to enhance process - allow for more variety or mechanics. AI jumps across the process, and does it in repetitive way, similarly to collage.
@AFinnstark And it is process which is essence of art for artists. It truly makes art not a product, but a journey.
Through process you learn skill, patience and yourself. You learn to accept your imperfections, and to aspire
It allow you to stop you in such world's rush
It teaches you life.
@AFinnstark Above everything, creating process is fun, and gives joy, allow people to find meaning in life, express their emotions.
But it is never art expressing those, but *process*.
It is the process mesmerising you deep enough that you distract yourself from day-to-day struggles.
@AFinnstark This is why people are disheartened by AI, and lose motivation
It is not money (though considering living in capitalism, it is important factor too), but that your emotions matters
This is hopeful tweet, but I saw several others saying artists giving up
@AFinnstark What's the point of drawing yourself, if you can prompt to achieve close-to-amazing image?
What does it mean for motivation of those who just started learning, or think of it?
Doing things yourself can be demotivating at times, but the reward of achieving is uncomparable Image
@AFinnstark But you will never know about the joy of achieving milestone, if you never tried at all. Or if you leaped across whole process, because it actually is making process look more tedious.

This is what is called "instant gratification". And it shapes our minds to demand.
@AFinnstark Those who advocate for ChatGPT - how many of you work under pressure?
Do you think capitalism will allow you to do the same work, but faster, so you will have more time for yourselves?
Or, what is more probable, it will put higher demands and expectations?
@AFinnstark We can see it on all sides: both studios and users are expecting crunch
Examples? If you are aware with @Mojang, it is perfect example that userbase demand exponentially bigger updates no matter the cost
Art field has been abused that way for decades
@AFinnstark @Mojang Do we really need more productivity, more speed, more everything?
Don't we live already in a world fed up of things, and aren't we burdened enough with amount of stimulants?
Why we treat automation of something that is actually fun and enriching as value?
@AFinnstark @Mojang Artists sometimes are mean to AI enthusiasts. I'm not advocating for it, as I don't think it serves good.
But thing I would like you all to understand is that we feel hopeless, and huge part of AI defenders are knowing that. Comments like that are common:
@AFinnstark @Mojang Stealing sketches from streams, putting them into Stabble Diffusion and claiming it as yours is common.
Spamming DeviantArt and other platforms with AI garbage is common.
Overworking was common, and is expected to rise.
AI is not tool, artist is tool
@AFinnstark @Mojang On very saddening video of one of my beloved creators, artist said those words:
"This whole AI thing has really just shown me how little people care"

Whoever you are, reading this: this is your time to prove that you care.
@AFinnstark @Mojang Advocate for legal moves being taken, #SupportHumanArtists by commissioning them, cancel your subscription from Artstation.
Try to spread the word.
Stop using AI, at least until it offers ethical services. Or ever, if you read between lines of philosophical part of this thread
@AFinnstark @Mojang Are you new to art?
Search tutorials, ask artists directly. Even most popular artist can give you some advices. I learned lot about modding from biggest figures, just because I was not afraid to ask
Search inspirations, draw with soul, be courageous. You will be there. I know it.
@AFinnstark @Mojang Are you someone in need of an assets, but you don't have money?
Visit art community. We are friendly. We will gladly teach you to draw yourself, or you will find some smaller artists who will draw cheaper
Or even guess what?
@AFinnstark @Mojang If you are friend with someone and they like your project, they can offer you drawing for free, or for split of future earnings
In modding community, this is exactly how it works. I never worked alone. We all put all our love into mods, supporting each other with what we made
@AFinnstark @Mojang I am gamedev, modder, musician, I write stories, poems, and loved to draw, plan on coming back to it.
Funnily, I'm also pro-piracy/infoanarchist.
But even pirates need to have moral codex. I always supported artists financially, as people like @donrosa and others made me "me".
@AFinnstark @Mojang @donrosa Taking stance myself back in September, I hold on to it. I will never include any AI in my creations
And I'm one of the best targets of this NFT-like scam: Still new in art. My code sucks. Writing this topic took me 10 hours with almost no breaks.
But this wouldn't be fun.
@AFinnstark @Mojang @donrosa Took me two weeks to articulate myself properly. But writing each tweet, I learned about myself (why human art matters for non-artists? - cool question I know now!), trying to put every argument to come deeply from my thoughts and make sense to others

Process matters
@AFinnstark @Mojang @donrosa I also want to thank everyone who gave me strength to write this: all artists I commented/liked, people who argued with me in respectful way, but also, obviously, human art that empowered me during writing.
Shout out to Pablo Bozzi's sets like this one!
@AFinnstark @Mojang @donrosa I could include a lot more evidence, but I asked everytime if I'm allowed to share. With such controversial topic, sharing the comment risks harm to those who shared their view.
This is also why I will block anyone leaving unrespectful comments on the Twitter thread.
@AFinnstark @Mojang @donrosa This is the end of this exhausting tweet thread, which may be one of the most thoughtful things I made.
You can check my linktr.ee/toma400 if you'd like to stop by.

And for the last word, remember about what Jon put so beautifully:
@AFinnstark @Mojang @donrosa For those who would like summary in non-tweeted way, Google Docs: bit.ly/3PtrxIx
Tumblr post will follow soon.
@AFinnstark @Mojang @donrosa Also I didn't cover several topics that I now realise I forgot, such as security concerns, for example.
But I don't want to water down my definitely more philosophical stance, so let this be done by others, who also will be more educated on that matter.
@AFinnstark @Mojang @donrosa After a while, decided it's better to address two major issues I forgot, at least with links.

Security concern:

Distrust on human artists:
