I don’t know what happened here but if @elonmusk doesn’t fix this within the hour with an explanation by morning, I’ll be on Capitol Hill tomorrow demanding that he be hauled in front of Congress.
I created this quick doc to track all journalist twitter accounts suspended tonight. Please reply to this thread with any I’m missing or any that are reinstated. 🙏🏽 THANKS. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…
1) something very odd with first tweet above in terms of its amplification.
2) it seems musk, based on his reply tweet, is leaning into a claim the suspended accounts broke yesterday's new rule by promoting a live automated mastodon account tracking his jet using public info.
I received his claimed explanation - troll armies, you can move on. He’s leaning into a claimed rule established yesterday - which was his right to establish; it’s a very bad decision to ban press for reporting on it - which is his right; and misrepresenting the facts on it all.
Here is Musk’s full exchange on Twitter Space as he tried to explain himself, misrepresented what the reporter was doing, the reporter challenged him and then Musk misrepresented it again and took off.
For those seeking an explanation, an attempt at one did come last night.

whoa. Twitter+SBF make it a good time for Facebook to have 8,000+ pages of internal emails, docs, audits unsealed... this is NdCal privacy suit that was finally starting discovery on Sandberg and Zuckerberg amid sanctions.
Here is Sandberg communicating with crisis comms.👀 /1
this came during the week after Cambridge Analytica broke wide open in 2018. Facebook needed press and world to focus on a single bad actor rather than an idea its entire business had grown on a "hack" of leveraging data harvesting for growth. Some still happening in 2018. /2
with these unsealed docs, you also get to see into just how powerful the platform could be, here is an app reportedly hitting 17 million users accessing timelines and photos across people who weren't even using the app due to the friends' data "growth hack." /3

It’s wild. Facebook’s secret program that allowed one of most famous ppl in world to post/spread non-consensual nudity to 50million people reported to be used for revenge porn was confirmed last wk in 57pg scathing report by its “oversight board” (which FB had misled). Yet… 1/3
Yet much of the attention last week was on a series of very misleading twitter threads from cherry picked messages by authors given access to twitter’s system and seem to take issue with twitter taking down non consensual nudity for someone considered a sensitive VIP. 2/3
If you’re covering twitter and things like firewalling its comms/lobby team from content moderations decisions or blocking these images, you should put it into context of Facebook’s decisions now considered mistakes. Both can’t be wrong at the same time. Cc @WillOremus 3/3

Wow. Facebook’s “oversight board” just released a 57pg scorching report on its cross-check” program with sugar coated all over it. Remember, this is the whitelisting program WSJ reported allowed Neymar to get away with posting “revenge porn” for a day - and 56 million views. /1
On that note, the “Board” noted Neymar avoided the consequences of what would happen to any of us common people for posting video like he did (account ban). And instead, you can’t make this up, Facebook rewarded him with an exclusive rights deal. /2
In fact, the “Board” suggests the priority of the program is to avoid negative consequences for its “business partners.” /3

beyond the unhelpful posture towards the free and plural press, new leadership twtr seems to not realize its peers (eg facebook) have been quietly warning about signal loss for 18 months as they've lost 70% of their market cap. due to tech and regulatory changes. 1/4
apple + privacy laws are working to meet user expectations around data protection. twtr has always had inferior "signal" data on its own platform as it doesn't explicitly collect much from users like FB. but even FB gets a majority of its data from 3rd parties + tracking 2/4
I can imagine techbros @ twtr tripling down on surveillance not realizing world is changing around them. that seems to be happening here. and will only get worse if they can't passively watch users outside their platform and have weak 1p data. 3/4

What an embarrassment of a thread. So twitter’s ceo EM engineered an incredibly weak hit job using internal materials that show Twitter firewalls its safety decisions from its comms and lobbying departments (for good reason, unlike Facebook). Nice job, Musk fans. Meanwhile…1/3
Musk blamed the free and plural press (again) falsely for “collusion” (his word) without anything of substance in any of this thread. He’s an empty trust vessel at this point. 2/3
Here is more on how twitter manages trust and safety which may explain why the comms and lobbyists / govt relations at twitter were so out of the loop when everything hit the fan on their admittedly very bad decision to remove a news story for claimed hacked materials. 3/3

Bam. Australia’s government has released its one year review of the News Media Bargaining Code - remember that new regulation which Facebook’s lobby and influence network misled industry and much of press on? They even went hostile on the govt to try to stop it? Remember? /1 Image
You may have heard it’s actually working due to a few great press reports that followed up on reality? Or testimony in Canada as they work to improve on something similar? This report confirms it’s addressing bargaining power imbalance supporting journalism as intended. /2 Image
Of course, you may have also heard same company that caused chaos to try to stop it was also not playing ball fully. Red/green are my highlights but Google has been much more supportive of journalism, one company here doesn’t have a deal with Google, 11 “No”’s for Facebook. /3 Image
