Sometimes referred to as the highlands, the Cordillera region is dominated by the Gran Cordillera Central, the largest and highest mountain range in the Philippines.
According to the Peakery, there are an estimated 281 peaks, if not more, in the whole region. With an elevation of 2,922 meters above sea level, Mt. Pulag is the highest peak in the Cordillera, as well as in the provinces of Benguet and Ifugao.
For some of the highest peaks in other provinces, we have Mt. Bangabang in Abra, Mt. Lungod in Apayao, Mt. Alchan (Alchanon) in Kalinga, and Mt. Kalawitan in Mountain Province. Can you name other mountains in the province? Tweet us your answers.
As the Cordillera is “cradled by majestic mountains,” it is also faced with unique challenges in development such as in building roads, distributing electricity, and creating internet connectivity.
Addressing these challenges while also maintaining and protecting the beauty of our mountains will require resources and policies, which will be more accessible with regional autonomy.
Rooted in the word ”pikpik”, meaning to beat lightly, pinikpikan is a soup dish composed of gently beaten chicken (and etag, for the i-Benguet and Bontok).
In modern times. ready-to-cook “napikpik” chicken is available in the market, or even stores near you. You can purchase your pick of cull or b-cull chickens and have their feathers burnt off with a blowtorch.
The practice seems especially violent to outsiders, but traditional pinikpikan is a careful, deliberate ritual meant to invoke the healing for the ill, request for favors, or express thanksgiving to Kabunian and one’s ancestors.
