I was reading a thread which I now can’t find. The topic was the panic surrounding “contact-overdoses” from fentanyl (mainly among LEOs).
Many people were stating what I understood to be statements of fact, but without sources or context.
People were asking fair questions and being lambasted for (non-combatively) daring to reveal their lack of expertise regarding the chemical properties of fentanyl and expressing their desire for further clarification. FUCKING IDIOTS.
The short of it is this: Contact overdoses, that is an overdose via skin contact with fentanyl and other high potency synthetic opioids, are not possible. Regardless of the strength, fentanyl doesn’t break the skin barrier. (What about the patches? I’ll get to it.)
Please note that this is from 2019, and despite these claims being routinely debunked, they continue to persist in 12/2022 via propagandist-journalists facing no repercussions.
“Pharmaceutical fentanyl is used in hospitals for patients with extreme pain. But even then, said Dr. Ryan Marino, an emergency medicine physician and toxicologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who uses #WTFentanyl to bust myths surrounding the drug.”
This is an example of the topic of “Scare Lore”, which is very similar to folklore, except the motivation is to cause fear that will drive people’s behavior and attitudes to an end desirable to the perpetrator. It’s also what my latest project is covering.
Some notable examples of scare-lore include poisoned Halloween candy, kidney thieves, aids needles, etc. various car-based lore, such as returning a headlight flash with another driver will result in your execution as a part of that other driver’s gang initiation.
