NOW: six people have died in the City of Buffalo as a result of this #Buffalo Blizzard - the mayor says the number of deaths is expected to rise.

@wkbw
Mayor says many roads in Buffalo are impassible and is asking you to stay home and off the roads. There is still a driving ban in place.
City is working with Nat Grid to get power back on and working to get to stranded drivers.

Focus now is plowing mains and secondaries -- especially those hospital routes.
Buffalo police are looking for help in search and recovery efforts -- partnering with snow mobilers
DPW: overnight crews had to pull out because of conditions - but this morning, there is a full assessment of the city, focusing now on life and safety
Crews are still working to get equipment "unstuck"

They will be moving to secondaries after the mains

Side streets largely will not be handled today
Garbage: Due to blizzard, garbage and recycling is suspended indefinitely.
Police: There are other 911 calls of people who've died (in houses or cars) ... they are working to get to those places... with plows and high lifts
Police have been working overnight to rescue people

NYSP/National Guard have resources coming in
URT is coming in -- using cold weather gear to help search and rescue efforts.
Snowmobilers: You can help by calling the D-District station to help search and rescue efforts

Marilla snow mobile club has come in to help

Do not go out on the road
Fire: Three very serious fires have been reported. Families have had to be relocated and helped by the Red Cross.

Fire had access issues because of the snow

It's been a "Herculean" effort as some of them work 96 hour shifts.

LATEST: @GovKathyHochul says we have a real challenge where roads are blocked by emergency vehicles -- though it's unclear which ones. @WKBW
NYSP have been involved in 500 rescues -- including a baby delivery and a man who had a mechanical heart battery running low.
Hochul: The number one message I want reenforced is "you need to stay off the roads."

Those of you violating driving bans are "endangering other people... and it's frustrating."

HOCHUL: There is a complication with utilities -- there is a storm challenge, keeping workers from doing their jobs

State Police launched "Strike Team" to go into high impact areas -- nursing homes, etc -- to clear snow and restore heat
Working on bringing emergency provisions to people

Social service orgs are coordinating with Red Cross and agencies on the ground.
SAFETY MESSAGING: Condition in #Buffalo are treacherous and dangerous. It is "far too cold to be outside."

If you are without power, it's safer inside than outside.

Wear loose fitting, layered clothing.

Stay in one room - huddle together to maintain warmth
