I know most of my followers aren’t here for academic beef, but if you want to end 2022 on a jaw-dropping saga of (alleged) plagiarism, (alleged) sock-puppeting and COLOURISING MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPTS (😱), you could do worse than check out #Receptiogate & super sleuth @mssprovenance
What are the underlying issues that make it such a compelling drama on academic Twitter? Well…
The alleged deception feels like an extension of academic grifting that is all too widespread: editors & authors in peer-review cahoots; souped-up websites featuring big names who turn out to have minimal involvement; figures with big titles stealing the work of ‘little people’
BUT even in this corrupted Academy, scholarly grift can still be exposed by dogged investigation and scrappy erudition. And some expertise regarding the relevant Sotheby’s manuscripts auction catalogue. It’s a heartwarming tale of hope for the future. Happy Christmas, everyone.

Matt Hancock's allies insist his announcement TODAY he will not seek re-election has naught to do with the fact that a no-confidence letter was set to be published TOMORROW by his association's officers

Following our story, the West Suffolk Conservative Association has published the letter on their website. It was sent on 1 December to the Chief Whip Simon Hart and to the Newmarket Journal for scheduled publication tomorrow. (But Hancock resigned first.)

Here's the Matt Hancock story.

The former Health Secretary's announcement that he would not seek re-election came only after the officers of his local Tory Association held a vote of no confidence in him, ruling him 'not fit' for to be their MP.

A letter announcing the West Suffolk Conservative Association officers' decision, seen by me, was sent to the Chief Whip on 1st December, but a copy was also sent to their local paper, embargoed for release tomorrow (Thursday 8).
Hancock's announcement he will not seek re-election now pre-empts that humiliation, which was due to come tomorrow in the Newmarket Journal (@NKJournal)

Went down to Clapham Common with my Press ID - because that’s my job. The bandstand was surrounded on all sides by women - and a few men - fed up, exhausted, let down.
Without question: this gathering at Clapham Common is less Covid safe, more angry and much more radical in terms of the voices dominating it, than if the Met had reached an agreement with #ReclaimTheseStreets for a marshalled events. (Instead, it is led by @SistersUncut)
Lots of women early on did just as the Duchess of C did - come look at the flowers for a bit, make their point, move on. Then it got darker, then Sisters Uncut started leading speeches from the bandstand, then the police moved in. As you’ll have seen from plenty of footage by now

Seriously, @Channel4? To deliver a homily on courtesy, you’ve invited a man accused by two independent reports of overseeing a culture of bullying and harassment? Surely, this isn’t actually true?
@Channel4 One question for @mahonalex & @iankatz1000: have you read the Gemma White report? Or the Laura Cox report?
@Channel4 @mahonalex @iankatz1000 I appreciate Channel 4 likes to provoke. But the people this is trolling are the many precarious employees who have risked their jobs to challenge the culture of bullying at Westminster. I thought ‘progressive’ news orgs were on the side of the whistleblower, not of the powerful.
