All right, some year-end self-praise. Here are my Top Ten favorite Todd in the Shadows moments/bits/segments from 2022:
Honorable mentions:
The part where I called Trump "America's flop era" (Witness)
"The best allyship..." ('90s Buses)
Houston is where? (This Is Why I'm Hot)
Brandon (Generation Swine)
Euphoria vs. Jax (Worst List)
"brake pads" (Unholy)
Michael Buble's Uptown Funk (Worst list)
(It's gonna be 2 moments per episode maximum, otherwise the top ten will all be the bus video)
10. Beyonce Ouija
Writer's block murdered me during this episode and I realized I needed a long vacation (which I took). The only thing that powered me through wanting to make this stupid joke. The Idina Menzel line was a last-second ad-lib.
9. A clip art stock photo of a pop star
I haven't enjoyed doing the worst list this much in years, my one-liner game was On. Point. My favorite was this one, and it was definitely inspired by the number of stock photos I use for my videos
8. LET 👏 SAM 👏 SMITH 👏 FUCK
Unlike the Beyonce ep, "Unholy" was the easiest episode I have written all year. It all just came to me instantly, including this line. I have never clapped to punctuate a sentence in my life, but I just knew I had to here.
7. "too shallow to be sinful"
From the same episode, and a line that probably only I am impressed with. But there's a real writer's joy in figuring out exactly what you're trying to say in five words or less. It was the last line I added to the video.
6. Majora's Macarena
As I wrote the episode, I realized that I was writing a whoooole lot of buildup and I wanted to capture the creeping dread that seemed to be seeping into the script. Side note: I have never played Majora's Mask.
5. The music cues in the bus video
This ep exists entirely bc I've always wanted to make my own VH1's "I Love the '90s," especially their specific brand of on-the-nose needledrops. The "Speed" segment didn't work AT ALL until I added Metallica's "Fuel"
4. Katy Perry is Effie Trinket
I was sitting on this insight for five years. The entire video is built around it. One brilliant point from the comments I wish I'd made: "The hero of those books is Katniss and not Effie for a reason."
(oh, and since this was my 2nd best episode of the year after the bus video, here's an honorable mention I forgot: Katy's cringetacular "I'm a woman, an artist, I'm liberated..." promo. What a wonderful find that was)
3. Will Smith on 106 & Park
With the video almost done, I came across a stray comment from 2005 on Jazzy Jeff's still-active web forum about a bad BET appearance. A quick search found a poorly labeled video on YouTube. I could not believe what I'd found.
2. The entire "American Dream" intro
That entire three minutes. Trust me on this: This is the tightest my writing has ever been. Also, admire my restraint that I only busted out my Neil Young impression once.
1. The ending Macarena montage
The staggering amount of Macarena clips I kept finding had to go somewhere. I really love how this montage builds, I wanted you to feel like you were going absolutely insane by the time the Chipmunks showed up

Uh, I feel kinda silly doing this, but uh... this is the waitress from the coffee house on 39th and Lennox. You know, the one with the braids?
Yeah, well I see you on Wednesdays all the time. You come in every Wednesday on your lunch break, I think. And you always order the special, with the hot chocolate, and my manager be tripping and stuff talking 'bout we gotta use water.
But I always use some milk and cream for you, 'cause I think you're kinda sweet.
