As we head into the new year I am seeing more church leaders looking at getting further equipped. It is very encouraging to see and there are a lot of great options out there. Here are a few reasons to consider 2023 as a year to get equipped in counseling.
1. Most pastors and leaders only take 1 or 2 courses in seminary in counseling (if that) yet consider the percentage of time spent caring for others. This is why most leaders say they feel ill-equipped and end up outsourcing all their counseling or doing damage.
2. Sin and suffering impact the whole person (body and soul) and sanctification is a life-long process of slow change. The work of counseling is complex as we join Jesus in His work of change and healing. Taking time to learn and grow in this is hard but deeply rewarding!
3. People have never been lonelier and more in need of personal care than today. God has given shepherds and leaders in the church to lead, protect, feed, AND know the sheep so that they can care for them.
4. Many people that come to professional counseling are simply looking for a friend who will love them, know them, and give them space, time, encouragement in Christ. Many need specialized care. Both are needed but discerning this takes practice.
5. The need for the church to faithfully care for those dealing with abuse and trauma is greater than ever before. This takes specialized training and healthy partnerships with professionals.
Our next 8 month @ABCounselors Biblical Counseling Certification cohorts start at the end of January. If you have questions about the value of certification I'd be glad to chat. You can also learn more here:
