1/ We are in the final days of a major project to rebuild the complex and busy Lewisham Junction, #London

This thread will look at the various stages of work over the past 8 days, and why the project is important for @Se_Railway passengers.
2/ In the early stages of any track or junction replacement, after disconnecting power and signalling, we rip out the old rail, sleepers, and ballast.

The vast majority of the old materials will be recycled.
3/ Special matting and new ballast are laid to form the new track bed.

We used more than 6,300 tonnes of new ballast for this job.

But, why is the track bed so important?
4/ The railway signalling, power supply, rails etc. are only as good as the track bed they sit on.

Wet beds, when the ballast falls away can cause track instability; leading to signalling, comms, and power supply faults.

This has been a big problem at #Lewisham - up to now!
5/ Once the track bed is laid it’s time to install the rails and sleepers.

Panels are prepared off-site, brought in via engineering trains and then lifted into place by this Kirow crane.

81 panels were lifted in at Lewisham, the heaviest weighing 28 tonnes!
6/ It's like a massive jigsaw puzzle!

And while the pieces are very big and very heavy, we need to be very precise.

We work to millimetres, as any discrepancies with the track alignment (gauging) could in a worst case scenario cause a train to derail.
7/ When the pieces of the puzzle are in it is time to connect them all up. Multiple teams of welders have been working on 200 welds in total.

Their work will ensure trains can travel smoothly over the junction, and people living close by will hear less noise.
8/ When the rails, signalling, power supply and other components are reconnected it is time to tamp.

Tamping is the railway equivalent of fluffing a pillow.

Again, it's about ensuring we have a stable and smooth track bed for the reasons given above.
9/ @Se_Railway passengers will be all too aware of how any incident at #Lewisham can lead to congestion and delays rippling across the entire network.

This work is another step towards making this section of railway more reliable.

Thanks for your patience while we worked🙏.
Thanks to Sam and his colleagues @ColasRailUK for sharing the pictures from site.

UPDATE: Power cables, which feed the third rail that powers trains, were damaged overnight following an incident in Brighton Depot. Engineers are on hand and are working as quickly as possible to try and fix the problems.
A train had hit a buffer stop at low speed at the train depot. The driver is uninjured and the incident is under investigation.
The collision has disrupted power to the depot and some of the adjacent train lines to and from Brighton.
This has resulted in some trains being unable to leave the depot and disruption for services at Brighton station, particularly for journeys to and from stations towards London.

❗️🔥We’re really sorry about the disruption passengers are experiencing in the Whitstable area due to a cable fire at the station.

👩‍🚒@kentfirerescue are on-site and the line remains closed for now. Please follow @Se_Railway for the latest travel advice. https://t.co/POFM2bKRMx
📷 The fire has caused significant damage to both the rails and third rail which provides power to the train.

🔧Our engineers need to replace 50ft of rail & third rail + 11 sleepers.

❌ The railway in this area will be closed both directions until at least early evening

/1 Image
🚆We’re working closely with our colleagues @Se_Railway to keep passengers moving but please expect disruption to services until at least early evening.

🙏 We’re sorry to anyone affected by this and please continue to follow @Se_Railway for the latest travel advice

⚠️ In the early hours of this morning, a train derailed in Plumstead at low speed when it was passing over a set of points, the equipment which allows trains to move between tracks. /1
If you look closely, you can see the train isn't sitting correctly on the rails and became stuck, blocking the North Kent lines in both directions between Charlton and Slade Green. /2 Image
🔧In the last hour or so, our engineering teams have been working on a process to "re-rail" the train - in other words, to lift it from the stuck position and place it back, correctly, on the rails in order to move it forward. /3

❗️ London Victoria is currently closed due to a fire alarm sounding within the station.
⚠️ Trains in the area are being held and cannot currently run to or from the station.
➡️We're working closely with the local emergency services to reopen the station as quickly as we can, but in the meantime, please check with @Se_Railway and @SouthernRailUK for the latest journey information. More info to follow as we have it.
➡️ No sooner than our last tweet and the team on-site have identified the issue and are in the process of resolving it, so we can reopen the station to customers.
🚆Once fully reopened, we'll get trains moving as soon as we can.

⚠️🔥We're really sorry for the disruption to passengers through #Gillingham because of a track fire. We believe the problem is linked to the third rail, the electrified rail which feeds power to trains.
We have engineers on site now looking to get the railway open again ASAP. /1
⚡️It looks like there's damage to an insulator pot, the ceramic gadget that keeps the third rail off the ground. If they are damaged, and the third rail touches the ground, electricity can earth through the pot and cause a fire. /2
For safety reasons, we've had to switch the power off to trains on all platforms at #Gillingham until we can repair the damage. Once again, we're sorry for the disruption. Please keep checking with @Se_Railway for live travel updates. /3

We're really sorry for the disruption caused by a signalling fault at #HitherGreen.

Engineers are investigating the issue and have found an axle counter failure.

Some @Se_Railway services will be affected between Tonbridge and Ashford and Sidcup and Grove Park.

/1
⚙Axle counters work by counting train axles (wheels) into and out of separate sections of track, helping tell us where trains are on the line.

🛠They form a key part of our signalling systems and when there is a failure, this results in the signals turning red as a failsafe.
⚠️👍UPDATE: Our response staff have fixed the signalling fault.

The teams are carrying out final tests and @Se_Railway services should be back up and running soon through #HitherGreen.

Please continue checking before you travel as some services may be delayed.
