imagine german bands doing a holocaust music show in 1944 🤮
seeing any russian appropriating the sacral word “bucha” for a music show makes me lose my last shit. bucha, where russians slaughtered and raped through women, men & little kids. bucha that became synonymous with genocide. putin or anti-putin - it is all a fucking show for them
after allowing my rage to vent a bit, here’s a simple breakdown for foreigners: learn about power dynamic here first. russians have been oppressing, enslaving and genociding ukrainians for centuries. that included aggressive cultural appropriation and stealing of our stories
them appropriating, fetishizing and instrumentalizing ukrainian genocide that is still being conducted by russians is as inappropriate as say any germans doing the same with holocaust while it was still happening. educate yourself on #RussianColonialism
there’s also the issue of foreigners celebrating it. a classic “all lives matter” case: ignoring the context of unequal power dynamic between the oppressing group and the oppressed, dismissing history of multi-generational oppression, equalizing the abuser and victim
this is a long way of saying: don’t be an ignorant jerk, listen to ukrainians and follow their lead if you claim to be our ally

ekaterina 2 led violent colonization of ukraine in 18th century, destroying first ukrainian democracy and putting millions of ukrainians into literal enslavement for centuries to come. generations of ukrainians were genocided under her direct orders
while selling to the west bullshit about “russian renaissance and enlightenment” ekaterina 2 was also using genocides, mass rapes and slaughter to complete full colonization of siberia all the way east to becoming first white colonizer of alaska
one of the fallouts from colonialism is a deep self-hatred and inferiority complex that affects the colonized. there are some ukrainians hating their ukrainianness and our homeland. i know so because i was the same
i really hope ishchenko, as well as many other ukrainians in the same situation, gets help and healing and eventually returns back to our ukrainian family
many of us ukrainians are able to keep standing amid this genocide by embracing each other, finding new or expanding existing families, harnessing our empathy, strengthening our collective responsibility for each other. choosing the light.
'ukraine’s line of argument in africa can be extremely compelling. despite Russia’s pretenses to the contrary, ukraine is fighting an anti-colonial war'
'and, just as african countries have the sovereign right to make their own alliances, ukraine too has the right to choose its future independently from its historic oppressor.'
'but this is a story only russia’s former colonies can tell africans because when africans hear this argument from the west, they instinctively distrust it. perceptions of western hypocrisy are a gift to the kremlin'
i don't want you to feel guilty around me for celebrating holidays. moreover, i want you to celebrate them like you really mean it. hug for real. say nice things for real. because ukrainians are a reminder for you not to take your comfortable lives, your families for granted
i haven't seen my parents for a year. i don't know if we will ever have another xmas together because no one in ukraine takes their lives for granted anymore. it is mentally devastating to see people around enjoying the simple joys of life that russians robbed us of
i never took my freedoms, my comfort, or my democracy for granted - i earned them in years of fierce battles. but now i also don't take for granted my loved ones. my home. my life.
i still can't believe it's happening but in wartime kyiv a group of brilliant ukrainian artists started working on illustrations to accompany my upcoming ‘russian colonialism 101’ guidebook - in our ultimate defiance to terrorist #RussianColonialism
‘russian colonialism 101’ will be art-directed by legendary sergiy maidukov & include 50 illustrations by leading ukrainian artists - made in wartime kyiv during a special workshop that has just started that will take several weeks.
