It's 2023. You probably want to know what is going to happen this year. You can count on the following:
--Donald Trump will be indicted
--The GOP leadership in the House (whoever that turns out to be) will whiff badly in their attempts at "investigations."
--The Supreme Court will continue to advance its hard right agenda and, as scandals around it deepen, will sink to new lows in the public's standing
--The Biden Administration's implementation agenda will be augmented by foreign policy progress & its approval ratings will benefit
--The narrative around @VP will change and appreciation for @KamalaHarris will grow as she is increasingly seen as Biden's heir apparent
--Dems will also see growing appreciation for their deep bench of excellent governors
--Trump's standing in the GOP will continue to falter. DeSantis will be seen as the heir apparent until the campaign reveals his brittleness, lack of charm & lousy track record.
--It'll be clearer by year end that the GOP candidate for POTUS in 2024 is neither Trump nor DeSantis.
--I have no special insight into what Biden will do. If he runs, he will win. If he chooses not to run, he will effectively choose his successor and I believe it will be @KamalaHarris. Pundits will howl and say she can't win. (As they did about Biden.) She'll win in 2024.
--US will emerge from 2023 with one of best economic recovery stories, optimism about performance in 2024 in beyond
--Ukraine will make progress against Russians. Diplo efforts may produce ceasefire but unlikely to produce real end to conflict. The end of Putin looks nigh.
--New gov't in Israel will be a huge and continuing diplomatic headache for the U.S. (You could tell by the way welcoming statements for new gov't were worded. Every positive statement was a double edge sword, a warning to Bibi & extreme right.)
--China will not invade Taiwan but will focus on domestic issues, notably economy and unrest tied to pandemic. But tensions will bubble. Should new Speaker of House visit Taiwan, it will be a replay of Pelosi visit...but tenser.
--Wars and famine in Africa will worsen demanding stronger international response...which will continue to underwhelm.
--Biggest crisis in Latam will be AMLO's continuing assault on democracy in Mexico.
Ok. That's 15. You do the rest. Am I a dyed-in-the-wool, pro-democracy and consequently pro-Dem partisan who lets his hopes color his analysis? Probably. But I still the above is likely to happen and the troll, bot & wing nut response in the feed that follows won't change that.

Thinking that Twitter exists to be a free-for-all for all views including those that are extreme, dangerous, defamatory, misleading, or inflammatory misunderstands Twitter, its advertisers (such as they were) and its users.
Twitter has two forms of value added: its content and knitting together the community it serves. If the content is degraded by being infused with lies, hate, distortions and extremist vendettas, not only does it pose a liability for advertisers who might be seen to support it...
...but the content is also likely to erode the community which is the asset the advertisers (and the members of the community are seeking to reach.) Should the exchanges between community members become odious to them, they will depart.

@SpeakerPelosi is an historic figure in US politics of the first magnitude. Yes, she broke barriers as a woman. But just as significantly, she was the most consequential & productive Speaker of the modern era.
She is a brilliant, courageous and shrewd political leader.
More importantly, as all those who know her will attest, she is an extraordinary human being--warm, deeply devoted to her family and friends, a woman of great faith and a deeply sincere patriot. She will be missed.
That said, the Democratic Party has great bench depth, talented, proven leaders capable of following in her footsteps. The man most often mentioned to succeed her, @RepJeffries, would make an excellent Speaker of the House and a great spokesperson for the Democratic Party.

In '20, @JoeBiden was second guessed by many (me included). He wasn't exciting. Too old school. Talked about healing. Talked about a clear agenda when the other side had little to offer but hate & good TV ratings. And he won decisively despite the skepticism of the "smart money."
For two years, he was derided for reaching out to the other side, for his compromises with the left or with the centrists in his own party, for not be exciting enough. He ignored the Beltway buzz. He did the dullest thing imaginable: he governed.
The American Rescue Plan lifted millions out of poverty and helped stimulate a job boom that now has produced 10 million jobs, a record, more than the last three GOP administrations added up. Record number of quality judges were appointed. Executive orders undid Trump's damage.

I will admit to (characteristic) confusion on how to handle developments at Twitter. At first I was, "I'm outta here" if Elon buys. But after talking to some of you and my colleagues, I was persuaded to wait and see. So, I'm waiting and seeing. That said...
It seems clear Elon is screwing this place up big time. The way he treated the Twitter team, his apparent disregard for the value of moderation, his complete misunderstanding of the value of verification and his continuing odiousness all suggest an app circling the drain.
Now, this $8 monthly fee also sets off alarms. The idea that verification is now meaningless means the site is less valuable as a source of information. The idea that the algorithm will prioritize people who pay is also disturbing and actually has a de-democratizing effect.

The GOP has been trying to change the subject re: the campaign all year. They don't want it to be about Roe. They don't want it to be about the threat to democracy. They don't want it to be about their plan to end Social Security & Medicare. They don't want it to be about Trump.
They don't want it to be about the fact they voted against every Dem plan to help people cope with rising prices. They don't want it to be about their votes against the Biden-Dem initiatives that have lifted millions out of poverty and created millions of jobs.
You can hardly blame them about wanting to change the subject. Their record is terrible. So they lie. And they embrace racism, anti-semitism and hate. And they have had plenty of help from many in the media who have bought into their distractions, deflections and dissembling.

I'm doing one of those embarrassing public about-faces that are usually associated with the Conservative party in the UK and US football analysts predicting this is the week Tom Brady and the Bucs will finally turn things around.
Despite my unbridled loathing for Elon Musk and my deep concern for what his take-over of Twitter may mean not just for Twitter but for public discourse and politics and the US and elsewhere, I've decided to remain on the platform for now.
Why? A few reasons:
1.) We're at a very dangerous moment in U.S. politics and it is important to use all the platforms available to counter the message and offer an alternative to the racist, sexist, irresponsible, anti-democratic MAGA GOP.
