The universal urge and call to prayer in response to the #DamarHamlin collapse reveals our true spiritual nature.

Every human being knows there is a Maker that:

• is over all things
• is personal and accessible
• is our only true hope & help

🧵
>> People’s spiritual inclinations were no longer suppressed or disguised

▸ Players prayed on the field.

▸ The game and studio broadcasters appealed for prayers.

▸ Social media exploded with people urging prayer.
>> Nobody debated the existence of God in response to these calls for prayer

Why?

▸ The injury, and gravity of it, stripped away all pretensions and smokescreens.

▸ Raw humanity, in need of God, was on full display.
>> Never forget what you saw on 1/2/23

▸ people are never more spiritually honest than in suffering or fear

▸ every human being knows there is a God and they spend inordinate amounts of effort to suppress it

▸ we must share the gospel with the world; Christ is our hope
Let’s continue lifting up this young man and his family to the Lord.

Psalm 46:1 — “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

James 5:16 — “…the prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

Adding 1 two-minute element to your worship gathering will bring significant spiritual growth to your church.

🧵 A Quick Story & 4 lessons from reciting the Apostle’s Creed for 3 years as a church:
STORY:

On Christmas Eve, a few hours before our service was scheduled, we had a water pipe bust in our auditorium.

Water was everywhere. We debated cancelling, but opted instead with moving to the gym.
Immediately we had to discuss adjustments to service. We had to make sure the songs were known (no screens).

Then the question was, “The Apostle’s Creed?” Do we keep it?

Yep. Let’s do it. We’ve recited this each week for 3 years. We know it.

The Lord used the Army to bring me to faith, but He also used it to grow me up.

🧵 8 Lessons the Army taught me that can help anybody ( #7 will cause some dissent 😅)
1. Discipline is unnatural, but liberating

Most people are not naturally inclined to disciplined action. We usually follow how we feel.

- set your goals
- breakdown the steps to accomplish them
- take those steps each day, no excuses

That’s discipline. It’ll change your life.
2. Hard things are painful in the moment, but satisfying in the end

Most people hate resistance or strain. But starting and finishing hard things is rewarding.

- going for a run
- buckling down to finish a project
- changing your diet
- having a hard convo

Embrace hard things

Great leaders are marked by 3 things they hold together, and if one is missing from the equation, everything changes:

🧵
1. Humility

Don’t think too highly of yourself or believe you are the end-all-be-all.

• Lift up others
• Celebrate their wins
• Refuse to be intimidated by other gifted people
• Lead for the sake of others, not personal gain

Great leaders possess this.
2. Convictions

Great leaders have deep underlying beliefs that drive them.

Henry Ford once disagreed with leaders blindly following market research by saying, “If I had asked people what they wanted, they have said faster horses.”

Great leaders don’t count opinions.

A deep belief in the sovereignty of God protects your heart from 10,000 different worries.

But here are 10 😉

🧵
1. That you’re just 1 accident of 8 Billion random people in the world.

Nope.

You’re not the random chance result of your parents reproductive organs.

God determined to create you before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4).
2. That your life has no purpose or meaning.

Not only did create you specifically, but on purpose.

You are designed particularly from features, personality, temperament, giftings, location, and era of time (Psalm 139:13-14; Acts 17:26).

Found boxes of baseball cards and old Sports Illustrated magazines.

Thinking about just trashing it all.

Yay or nay?
I was instantly transported back to the 80s and 90s in my bedroom. 😂

These things don’t have any monetary worth, and they serve no usage, so why is it so hard to toss them??
There was this myth as a kid that these things were going to be worth tons of $$$ one day.

It was a different era.

Every preacher should ask and answer this question about your sermon:

• what’s the main point?

And every sermon should aim to address listeners’:

• head (mind)
• heart (affections)
• hands (will)
▸ What’s the main point?

You need to ask this before you start writing or outlining

Whether you start with a TEXT or TOPIC, you need to quickly discover what the main thrust of the sermon will be.

You should have a quick answer if someone asks, “What’s the sermon about?”
▸ Hit the HEAD

Every sermon should address the MIND of the listener.

How?

- demonstrating the argument of the text
- showing the truths we must believe
- connecting those truths to broader theological themes of Scripture
