THREAD – A Look Back at the Weird Demonization of the Unvaccinated During COVID

Though the fact that COVID vaccines do not prevent transmission was clear from the outset, this myth has been a primary cause of the venom launched at those who’ve refused COVID vaccines. 1/

Officials in many jurisdictions proposed making the unvaccinated pay more for healthcare. 2/

In Victoria, Australia—where lockdowns were longer than in perhaps any other city in the world—one politician proposed cutting the unvaccinated out of the national health system entirely. 3/

A particularly disturbing idea that began to gain serious traction among the elite commentariat was to have hospitals triage emergency care to serve the unvaccinated last—a fairly clear-cut crime against humanity. 4/

Some even began to suggest that the unvaccinated should be denied healthcare entirely. 5/

One vocal proponent of the idea of triaging emergency care to disfavor the unvaccinated was David Frum. 6/

Piers Morgan agreed that the unvaccinated should be denied emergency care. 7/

Shockingly, this bizarre idea of triaging emergency care based on vaccination status is still being proposed to this day. 8/

The demonization of the unvaccinated was far from limited to healthcare. The CDC paid screen writers and comedians to promote COVID vaccines and even mock the unvaccinated. 9/

Vilifying the unvaccinated became a kind of illiberal fad among the elite commentariat. 10/

In a bout of recidivism to the early 20th century, Austria introduced the chilling concept of “lockdown for the unvaccinated.” 11/

“Lockdown for the unvaccinated” gained traction in the English-speaking world as well. 12/

Most countries, cities, and states across the western world introduced vaccine passes that their own citizens had to show in order to partake in daily life. 13/

The WHO published an extensive document on implementing a digital vaccine-pass system, including an international vaccine status registry and instructions on how to later revoke someone’s vaccine pass. 14/

The most dystopian of these vaccine pass systems was in Lithuania, where the unvaccinated were banned from nearly everything; the few shops where they could purchase essentials had to post red signs indicating unvaccinated persons could be present. 15/

Not only did governments exert this pressure through policy, but in many cases officials deliberately stoked the social stigmatization of the unvaccinated. President Biden said the unvaccinated were looking at a winter of “severe illness and death.” 16/

And who could forget Justin Trudeau’s classic fuhrer-style rant about having to share public transportation with the unvaccinated, despite government documents later revealing that he had no science to back any of these claims. 17/

The front page of the Toronto Star even ran a quote from someone who apparently thought the correct approach to the unvaccinated was to “let them die.” 18/

Like so much of the response to COVID, this illiberal fad was unscientific, totalitarian, brutal and dumb. That some healthy young people were surely coerced into receiving this injection when the benefits did not outweigh the risks is unconscionable. /end
