After the #DamarHamlin incident, the conversation around CPR training and AED access is important.
But we can't sidestep some hard truths.
America is addicted to this violent and brutal game. And the @NFL has repeatedly shown that does not care about Black players' health.
"Why do you have to bring race into it?"
70% of the NFL's players are Black. There are only five Black coaches, and no Black team owners. We watch these men destroy their bodies every week for our entertainment.
So... will this moment be one in which we push for football to be safer? To pressure the @NFL to make the game less brutal for its players?
We will see.
"Just send thoughts and prayers!" "This man has brought us together"
From sports to guns, to policing, Americans love trying to appeal to the divine and to some weird notion of "unity" to avoid any discussions about the normalization of unnecessary violence in our society.
And it's not just the NFL.
College football players, who are also majority Black, put their lives on the line for no pay. The *tens of billions* of dollars in revenue they bring to the schools go to support non-revenue sports that white students play:
Despite all the research on CTE and early deaths, Americans hate feeling bad about their favorite bloodsport.
And they *really* don't want to feel bad about a bloodsport that exploits Black athletes and makes them play for free in college before joining the big leagues.
Anyway, the NFL doesn’t want us talking about any of these things-player safety, race and inequalities.
A month will pass, the Super Bowl will be here, Rihanna will dazzle us with her Halftime show…
And the football machine will keep on rolling.

Now the WH Boxin’ Becky seems to have provoked the anger of the two black women after throwing a glass of.. something.
As the women advance, she takes off her hat to free up her vision. She backs up to create a good enough distance between she and her opponents
When one of her opponents falls, she rushes for the MMA ‘ground and pound’ but gets there a split second too late. mz dreads was able to recover back to her feet— however she is turned away from Boxin’ Becky.
I totally am sympathetic to those who are part of groups that have been targeted on this app.
The waves of anti-Blackness, misogyny, anti-Semitism in these times have been off-the-charts bad. Whatever people need to do to protect their emotional space, they should do.
Anecdotally, I find that (mostly) white folks say they are leaving because they don't want to give money to Elon Musk because of racism, misinfo, etc.
Instead of wailing about Musk, why not channel that energy to give money and support to marginalized people doing good work?
As a native Dallasite and having lived in Texas again for the last two years, I am profoundly sad to see the paper's endorsement of Greg Abbott.
As a journalist, I'm pretty disturbed by it.
Short thread. Here goes:
I see people saying "newspaper editorials don't matter."
Right now, they do matter. We are seeing extraordinary attacks on democracy, minorities, and women.
The @dallasnews endorsement of Abbott is now part of the attack on Texans' personal freedoms. It is truly a shame.
I want to be clear-- the reporters at @dallasnews have done incredible work about the issues affecting the state, and including Abbott's many right-wing hijinks, including appeasing Trump by using state resources to audit the 2020 election results.
