Tip 1: Show your passion using concise language that is compelling but does not sacrifice professionalism.
You do NOT have to disclose personal information. Make and keep your boundaries.
Tip 3: Convey grit and emotional intelligence. #PhDlife is filled with problems that need careful thought, response (after and aside from reaction), and dedication to finding solutions.
Tip 4: Display your readiness for doctoral-level thinking by focusing on a public health problem that you want to solve and suggesting the pathways you wish to take to help solve it.
Tip 5: Demonstrate fit of you and the program. Name people, research groups, centers, etc., that you want to work with.
Even the very best applicants will be rejected if there is not a good fit between what the program can offer and what you are seeking in your training.
Tip 6: Polish until it shines. Writing is thinking. Make sure the logic, organization, grammar, and spelling reflect your thinking.
Proofread... and then again… and then again.
Bonus tip: If the program to which you are applying requests replies to short answer questions in the application, your answers are a reflection of your thinking and interest. Avoid copying and pasting text from your personal statement.
Celebrate your application submission. Just applying is a HUGE accomplishment that requires thought, time, work, and requesting support from others.
I know…these tips would have been more helpful BEFORE your application was due.
Please bookmark these tips for future use if you are working to secure a #PhDlife opportunity!
And all the best to the incredible applicants. Thank you so much for your application!
