I sketched this piece a couple of weeks ago, and since then two more women have been murdered, Natalie McNally and Bruna Fonseca.
This time last year the country came to a standstill, shell shocked with grief after the murder of Ashling Murphy.
What seemed to strike a chord was the randomness of it. “She was just going for a run”. It could have been any of us. It could be any of us. Just weeks after Sarah Everard’s murder in UK, who was just walking home after a night out, we were shown we’re not even safe in daylight.
As women we take precautions all the time for our safety, most we don’t think about, just do on autopilot because that’s what society has taught us. We make sure friends aren’t walking home alone at night, take taxi numbers down, tell friends to text us when they get home safe.
But does being home mean they are safe? For a lot of women home is the most dangerous place. Women are so much more likely to be murdered in their own home, that it barely seems to shock us anymore. It’s the murders of women outside the home that shock us.
Male violence against women needs to be taken seriously, both random and domestic.
Domestic violence needs to be taken seriously & the people experiencing it need to be given the help they need (funding for resources, leave from work, etc) & we need proper sentencing, not just suspended sentences, for “promising young men” who commit violent acts against women.
& Giving the Conor McGregors and Andrew Tates of the world airtime directly contributes to the culture we’re raising our young men in that leads to violence against women.
In the meantime, please consider donating to the @Womens_Aid fundraiser on my Instagram if you can afford to do so.
I recently completed this project turning the back of @st66dublin into a giant progress pride flag & tribute to Keith Haring. It was a bit of a challenging canvas, but I'm really happy with the finished piece, looking forward to having drinks here when they finally get to open.
The progress pride flag was designed by @danielquasar. It's a redesign of the rainbow LGBTQ pride flag. It includes black & brown stripes to represent marginalised LGBTQ communities of colour, along with the colours pink, light blue & white, which are the transgender pride flag.
As well as painting a portrait of Keith Haring, I wanted to pay tribute to his work as well as the activism which much of his work was embedded in. One of the main issues Haring highlighted in his work was AIDS, wanting to break the silence & the stigma & to spread awareness.
Yesterday's 'Save Our Children' rally. Here's some information on the organisers / speakers.
It was organised by Hermann Kelly, who was editor of The Irish Catholic 'newspaper' during the thick of the abuse scandals and reports. He regularly covered up & denied clerical abuse,
even writing a book 'exposing a culture of false accusations'. He's a fan of the 'false memory' theory of 'holocaust deniers' in the debate on clerical child abuse & claims the redress board is nothing but "a State ATM for scroungers". He's head of fascist Irish Freedom Party.
The man in the grey suit to the left of the banner here is Justin Barrett. We can see he's holding the megaphone mic here, to address the crowd. Barrett also likes addressing crowds at neo-Nazi rallies in Germany.
