Congress is the opposite of a startup, but if I had to compare, Congress is like a startup where the exec team never stops arguing over the product roadmap.
They spend their entire year in a locked room arguing. Spending little to no time talking with their customers or front line employees to understand the issues. Burning copious amounts of cash.
They focus on parts of the roadmap that they think will impress their board and help them keep their jobs. Meanwhile their employees are furiously drafting the actual roadmap and making sure to include things that could help their careers or help them make extra side hustle.
They can’t stop arguing or agree on what’s important! Suddenly, it’s the end of the year, and their annual board meeting is soon. 24 hours before the meeting, their employees hand them the “completed” roadmap. It’s 4,155 pages long 😫 and needs $1.7 trillion for success, lol.
As execs, they know if they don’t get the board to approve the budget on time, important things could slip, and their employees could revolt. That would make them look bad. So, without reading any final drafts, they emphatically support the roadmap regardless of its contents.
Every year goes by like this, and they don’t even look back to see if the things they argued over had the results they expected. They spend $1.7T but never review any metrics that help inform what they should be in the roadmap the following year.
