11 reasons why you should build a startup in 2023:
New tech = new opportunities:

AI lets you do things 10x cheaper and faster

But most of the biggest AI companies of the future haven't been founded yet

And many industries will be slow to adapt

There are tons of opportunities to disrupt entire industries right now

Investors have a lot of money to deploy

Many raised large funds in 2021 but didn't make many investments in 2022

OpenAI is worth $20 billion

It was founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and others and has raised over $2 billion

But years before launching ChatGPT it was started as a non-profit

Here's the story:
OpenAI was founded by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and nearly 20 others in 2015

Originally structured as a non-profit, the organization didn't accept investments

Instead they took $1 billion in donations from Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, and more notable names
The initial team included 9 top AI researchers

Salaries for AI researchers can be comparable with NFL quarterback prospects

But many took lower salaries to join OpenAI

@ilyasut said it was "to a very large extent, because of its mission."

Bill Gurley is a legendary investor

Controversially he was an influential member of Uber's early board

Here's his list of 10 startup governance red flags (FTX should have listened to these):
Letting the good times roll:

Bull markets breed bad behavior

Speculation and risk increase, but when everything "appears" to work then people go along for the ride

Investors should stand firm in asking founders for strong governance, even if it means losing out on deals
The lack of a legitimate board:

Board directors have a fiduciary duty to look after a company

Beware when a board is made up of friends of the founder or who have no relevant experience

The founders either don't embrace governance or are intentionally undermining it
