I just got off the phone with Tory Lanez's new lawyer David Kenner, and it's clear to me that people need to stop assuming he represented Suge Knight in the case that put Suge in prison. He didn't! He represented him in a robbery case back in the 1990s and got him probation.
Kenner was not Suge Knight's lawyer for his most recent case, in which he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter over a fatal hit-and-run at Tam's Burgers in Compton. Kenner is unhappy that so many hip-hop blogs etc are saying he was when he actually wasn't.
Kenner's biggest claim to fame appears to be getting Snoop Dogg acquitted of murder aka "murder was the case that they gave me." He told me he has a video of Snoop at his 80th birthday party saying, "Without David Kenner, there'd be no Snoop Dogg." bit.ly/3VYLf0j
So, if you are one of the aggregators who took my Kenner tweets yesterday and used them to anchor a story about how he got Suge Knight 28 years in prison, you really should correct.
Kenner confirmed to me that George Mgdesyan is no longer representing Tory Lanez. It's David Kenner all the way. Regarding post-conviction motions, he told me he's considering all options. He may discuss this a bit tomorrow in court, but the big stuff won't come until later.
Given all this, it is pretty understandable that websites said Kenner had a part in Suge Knight’s 28-year prison sentence. He’s also quoted in articles talking about the case. But he swore to me on the phone he had nothing to do with the 28 years.
More about the 2015 case. Kenner didn’t represent Suge during the plea. That was Matthew Fletcher. Given all the issues surrounding the case and Fletcher, it’s certainly understandable that Kenner is a little sensitive about being associated with it. latimes.com/california/sto…

I'm watching opening statements in the three federal prisoners' murder trial, and it's a good reminder how far apart some of these gangster nicknames can be. We've got Striker and ByeBye, aka Knockout, but then we've also got a guy whose nickname is Harvey.
I'll explain the case in an article later, but the three men on trial are Aurelio "Augie" Patino, Christopher "Sneaky" Ruiz and Jose "Torch" Villegas. They are accused of premeditated murder for the fatal beating of Javier Sandez in 2013. bit.ly/3Izpv8m
"An inmate was assaulted on the day mentioned by government counsel, and he died as a result of that assault," a defense lawyer just told the jury. He says he hasn't heard prosecutors accept responsibility for the lack of medical response that contributed to the inmate's death.

Rapper Tory Lanez’s sentencing for shooting Megan Thee Stallion has been rescheduled from Jan. 27 to Feb. 28 as his new lawyers prepare to ask the judge to grant him a new trial. This was finalized in court a few minutes ago.
Tory Lanez was brought into court in handcuffs, wearing orange jail garb, two large white necklaces with a cross on each, and a black beanie-like hat. He answered “yes your honor” when Judge Herriford asked if he wants Kenner and Barhoma to be his new lawyers.
With that, Judge Herriford authorized Kenner and Barhoma to be Tory’s lawyers, and George Mgdesyan and Shawn Holley are officially off the case. (I didn’t realize Holley was still technically Tory’s lawyer.)

Given that prosecutors have already said they’ll re-try Danny Masterson and Cohen’s motion seems doomed to failure, I headed up to the 15th floor for David Kenner’s appearance for Tory Lanez. Kenner is talking to Tory’s father and stepmother in the hallway now.
Nancy has the deets on why we’re still in the hallway and not in the courtroom. Tory hasn’t been transported yet.
Tory Lanez is now to appear in court at 1:30 pm, his lawyer David Kenner told reporters a few moments ago.
(Jail transportation issues are very common. Having a defendant in custody always complicates things.)

Danny Masterson will go on trial a second time for three counts of rape.
When I stopped by the hearing, Judge Charlaine Olmedo was practically begging the lawyers to stop arguing emotional issues and start citing case law and statutes. Masterson’s lawyer Phil Cohen wasn’t doing so, but maybe that will change soon.
No surprise here: After telling the attorneys they were arguing emotional issues and not focusing on case law and statutes, Judge Olmedo rejected Danny Masterson’s lawyer’s “invitation to dismiss” his three rape charges. A second trial is now a sure thing. Jurors report March 27.

It’s a rainy morning in Los Angeles, where Harvey Weinstein is scheduled to be sentenced at 9:30 for his two sex assault convictions from the recent trial. I’ve been assured by his lawyer Mark Werksman that the sentencing will be delayed, likely to late February or early March. Image
Werksman told me prosecutors are agreeing to the delay. “It has to happen in court Monday. There will not be a sentencing.” Given that, I didn’t do the 5 am commute necessary to secure one of 11 seats Judge Lisa Lench allows in her courtroom for journalist outside pool reporter…
…but I am stopping by the courthouse to check out the commotion. Just got here. I doubt I’ll be able to get a seat in the courtroom to see the sentencing be delayed, but I’m going to see what I can get. There could be a public seat available.

Regarding Tory Lanez's Tuesday court date, yes, there is a date listed on the jail roster. It's not on Judge Herriford's calendar, and he's got a bunch of other stuff at the time. Attorney David Kenner confirmed to me last week he's now representing Tory. Image
Kenner is a longtime criminal defense attorney whose clients include former Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight. Anyone with actual experience in criminal law (not all lawyers) will tell you he's joining the case a bit late: Before trial would have been better.
Penal Code 132 regards false evidence and witness tampering. (132 is also Judge Herriford's court department number.) @LASuperiorCourt actively hides court documents from the public, so it's really impossible to find out what exactly is going on based on the court record.
