@FourthWatch Chris Wallace was CNN's big bet for the now-defunct CNN+. Is the investment paying off?
Last weekend he was talking to actor Hugh Jackman about the height of a comic book character. It was a far journey from his 18 years hosting Fox News Sunday: fourthwatch.substack.com/p/whos-watchin…
@FourthWatch Sunday's "Who's Talking to Chris Wallace" had just 58K in the demo and 462K total viewers (well behind Fox but ahead of MSNBC).
The show airs just once at 7pmET (or 4pmPT), and isn't repeated throughout the evening.
@FourthWatch Of course, ratings aren't everything.
Wallace's interview with Nikole Hannah-Jones and AOC made news, and seemed to be in his comfort zone. But more often we see easy listening Chris Wallace, in mostly newsless softball interviews with celebrities...
@FourthWatch The failure to make “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace” a successful traditional television show is not really Wallace’s fault. It was conceived as the centerpiece of a streaming service, where building a library of content was surely part of the plan.
@FourthWatch It's why the arrangement feels ill-conceived from the start. Why would this content feel at home on CNN+, which was supposed to be a news streamer? And why would someone as inexperienced in interviewing singers and actors would be their preferred vessel? fourthwatch.substack.com/p/whos-watchin…
@FourthWatch The Chris Wallace bet was placed during the Zucker Era, and now it’s the Licht Era’s job to clean it up. Any objective observer would say CNN is not getting its money’s worth.
So what happens next? Does it stay on HBO Max but leave CNN? Or shift gears?

Based on the CDC's own data, vaccinated 80-year-olds are more likely to die with COVID than all unvaccinated Americans below 65. It's such a big discrepancy that basically every American, vaccinated or not, looks like they're in the same category. 3/
@FourthWatch Too often our media treats issues it deems "toxic" as "all or nothing" - pretending there are no vaccine side effects, while another side assigns vaccine side effects to everything it reads.
Grant Wahl's death wasn't related to the COVID vaccine.
But that doesn't mean vaccine injuries don't exist. And a press that treats the topic as too toxic to discuss breeds further conspiracy theories. My @FourthWatch newsletter (the first on Substack!): fourthwatch.substack.com/p/allornothing…
@FourthWatch The press is still covering for SBF (and now his ex too).
But his arguments about "misinformation" seed the ground for the kind of censorious activities our modern anti-speech activists in the press have been cheerleading. He'll fit right in at the NYT. @FourthWatch: fourthwatch.substack.com/i/94560142/dav…
1. "Twitter Files" are a fascinating look at the inner workings of Twitter, and its coziness with power (both sides). There isn't a smoking gun, and anyone who has followed these stories for years (COVID suppression for example), shouldn't be surprised.
2. The Hunter Biden laptop suppression in October 2020 is THE story that tells us so much about our moment. It's why I made it the prologue to my book, #Uncovered, out in February.
Download that chapter now for free here. Let's go down memory lane: bit.ly/uncoveredbook
3. In #Uncovered, I describe the Hunter Biden laptop handling as "perhaps the most egregious and obvious example of the elite censorship collusion racket between tech companies, government forces, and the national media that we’ve ever seen."
We don't yet know the motive behind the horrific shooting at the Colorado Springs LGBTQ nightclub.
But I've seen a lot of comparisons to the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando in 2016. So it's important to remember what that story ended up actually being about. 1/
In 2018, @HuffPost published a fascinating investigation headlined "Everyone Got The Pulse Massacre Story Completely Wrong."
What seemed to be a story about homophobia and a hate crime against the gay community turned out to be... not that at all.
The Pulse shooter had never been there. His original target was a shopping center. He didn't know it was a gay club: "A security guard recalled Mateen asking where all the women were, apparently in earnest, in the minutes before he began his slaughter." huffpost.com/entry/noor-sal… 3/
CBS News has paused posting on Twitter over “uncertainty” with the platform due to @elonmusk “out of an abundance of caution”… while they continue posting on TikTok.
Because it’s about perception, not reality
This week the head of the FBI there’s "national security concerns" about the Chinese government’s involvement in TikTok: “There’s plenty of reason by itself to be extremely concerned.”
CBS News continues posting there, but (performatively) not Twitter.
