Another Saint today; Gregory of Nyssa; this saint came from a notable family of early Christians in Asia Minor. Along w/ older brother, St. Basil the Great and their friend, theologian Gregory of Nazianzus, he is remembered as one of the Cappadocian Fathers. /1 #CatholicChurch
Among other doctinres, they asserted the superiority of Christian teachings over those of traditional Greek philosophy. /2
Although lacking the organisation skills of Basil and the contemporary influence of Gregory of Nazianzus, the learned theologian made significant contributions to the doctrine of the Trinity. /3
In 372, Gregory was consecrated Bishop of Nyssa, a remote city in eastern Anatolia near Armenia, where Arianism, a non-trinitarian belief, had taken hold. /4
His most enduring contributions concerned the indivisible nature of the Trinity, the necessity of unquestioning faith in seeking to understand the infinity of God, the emulation of God through the example of Christ & the importance of achieving this w/-in a monsatic community. /5
Since the middle of the 20th century, a significant increase in interest in Gregory's works from the academic community, particularly his writings involving universal salvation, have resulted in challenges to many of the traditional interpretations of his theology. /6
