Amy Hamm Disciplinary Hearing Day 10 Update:

The one where BARBARA FINDLAY becomes unhinged, followed by FALLING ASLEEP!

If you want unbiased reporting, sorry, today's events preclude me from that...

🧵

#istandwithamyhamm @preta_6 @eva_kurilova @ABRadFems @inferavirino

1/
Today, both sides gave closing arguments on the eligibility of Dr. Marianne Grossman as an expert witness for Amy's defence. Amy's lawyer, Karen Bastow gave her arguments, largely reiterating the written submissions previously submitted to the panel taking just under 40min

2/
Next, the lawyer for @BCnursemidwife, BARBARA FINDLAY, began her arguments. I'll quote her directly as much as was possible contemporaneously. The crux of her argument was that Dr. Grossman was not Canadian an thus her expertise was ineligible.

3/
FINDLAY launched into her rubuttal of Dr. Grossman:

“A transgender youth in Canada, or an adult for that matter, may discover their identity as transgender and when they do they find it in the context of a medical and a legal system and an educational system that

4/
recognizes and understands, accepts and assists with, their identity as transgender people. The schools teach it, the doctors practice it, the nurses care with it. That is a vastly different experience of being a transgender youth. That is a vastly different experience of

5/
being a transgender youth than it is to be a transgender youth, in a situation where being trans may be criminalized, being trans may mean you can’t get trans affirming care, because the word affirming is taken to be too much of a positive word. It is different where the

6/
laws say you are not entitled to participate in social society the way non transgender people can. It is different when you know hate speech laws don’t cover you. It is different when you know you cannot live a full life as a trans person without hiding your identity.

7/
So, the suggestion that medicine is medicine wherever it occurs is at best naive and at worst entirely ignores the nature of this case."

8/
The obvious irony in this excerpt from her statement is that she describes an entirely captured series of institutions, all propping up the same set of ideological narratives. Where the ideas are so deeply indoctrinated that to merely question them is tantamount to heresy.

9/
This, of course, reveals the crux of why this hearing is happening. Amy is guilty of only one infraction. She publicly questioned the orthodoxy. In doing so, she did not allow her thoughts or beliefs to compromise her professionalism or her care for patients.

10/
She did not direct her thoughts towards anyone in her care, and she has received no formal complaints from any patient in her care, ever.

She simply spoke publicly in a way that would threaten the entire house of cards these ideologues live in.

11/
FINDLAY also creates a straw man argument, whereby somehow there's an imaginary world in the US where her deepest nightmares are a reality. There is no such world. And what's more, Amy has never advocated for any changes to move in the direction of such a fantasy.

12/
As best I can tell, FINDLAY is arguing against some fictional nightmare she has created in her mind. Which helps explain how she can maintain near complete detachment from the biological realities that youth and children are faced with when they seek help from

13/
The healthcare system in Canada. Instead of our medical professionals taking a personalized, individual approach to patients presenting with gender dysphoria, we've already decided their treatment path, from the moment they self diagnose.

14/
The REAL medical professionals, like Amy and Dr. Grossman commit the sin of not assuming they know WHY an individual is experiencing dysphoria. Rather, they would prefer to seek to understand the root cause so that it might be alleviated with the least possible distress

15/
and long term side effects to the patient.

The problem for people like FINDLAY is that this approach affords the insufficient self virtue as they don't get to claim the moral high ground and support a low resolution, un-nuanced, gender affirmative model.

16/
They would have to acknowledge to themselves that they don't in fact have all the answers, and that children and adolescents don't always know themselves or have the ability to consent to becoming lifelong medical patients or foregoing healthy organs or sexual function.

17/
FINDLAY ends with the following statements:

"there is no debate here"
"Here the debate is settled"

And these are the most revealing. For all her talk about scientific rigour and good research, she fails to understand the most basic premise of science:

18/
There is ALWAYS debate and nothing is EVER settled.

See every major scientific discovery in history. Examples abound.

19/
After hearing arguments from both sides, the panel had one follow up question for BF and several questions for Karen Bastow that were asked from two panel members who had not previously spoken.

20/
The nature of the questions was concerning as they seemed to ideologically side with the concerns BF raised. The panel indicated they would need time to deliberate and make a decision about whether to allow Dr. Grossman to testify.

21/
Rather than adding further delay, the Panel asked to begin with Dr. Kathleen Stock after the lunch break.

Thankfully, Doc Stock did not disappoint and showed up as her usual, highly intelligent and pleasant self!

22/
Somewhat more shockingly, listening to Lisa Bildy review Stock's CV seemed to put BF to SLEEP. There was at least a 10 minute period where BF could be clearly seen on camera nodding off for periods of 10-30 seconds and visibly waking as her elbows slipped on the table!

23/
For someone who only an hour ago was energetically impugning and borderline slandering the reputation of Dr. Grossman with gusto, she was rather rudely sleeping on camera, as though she wasn't even taking the proceedings seriously...

24/
At this point, the hearing will not continue tomorrow as scheduled because the Panel needs a day to deliberate on the admissibility of these two witnesses for Amy's defence. The parties have asked for 8 more days. 8 MORE days of process as punishment.

25/
Please help Amy by sharing this as much as you can. This is a gruelling process and it deserves far more attention that it's gotten so far. 🙏

Personal observations on day 8&9 (Jan 10-11, 2023) of Amy Hamm’s (@preta_6) @BCnursemidwife disciplinary hearing. 🧵…

1/
Day 8 wrapped up the testimony of Dr. Greta Bauer.

Dr Bauer continues to present as smug and condescending at times. This is only surpassed by the behaviour of BARBARA FINDLAY on cross examination.

2/
When asked simple, straightforward questions by @LDBildy that challenge her ideology, Dr. Bauer often dodges by making pedantic points about how the ethics of research are performed and how she as an epidemiologist does things.

Especially as the 9th day of @preta_6 hearing is about to begin mere hours from now, I have been trying to come to terms with how entire professional regulators like @BCCNM and @CPOntario have become so ideologically captured that they will hold disciplinary hearings 2/

Today, as an observer for the disciplinary hearing of @preta_6, I witnessed what I think was one of the most despicable, unethical displays of quackery I've ever seen. A 🧵...

1/
BARBARA FINDLAY, a lawyer for BCCNM, spent the better part of the day attempting to discredit the statements of the expert witnesses that Amy's lawyers plan to call. She asked her last "expert" witness, Dr. Greta Bauer, to opine on the credentials of other witnesses.

2/
This began, by repeatedly referring to Dr. Linda Blade as "Ms. Blade," ignoring the fact that Linda is not only married, but also holds a PhD in Kinesiology from SFU. A fact that ought to have been rather obvious given the context of attempting to discredit her CV.

After two days of hearings for @preta_6, there’s a nagging thought that I can’t shake after watching yesterday’s cross examination of the head of the UBC nursing program by Amy’s very diligent lawyer, Karen Bastow:

1/x
Amy graduated from the UBC nursing program, with honours, roughly a decade ago and has maintained continuing education since then. She is facing two allegations from the public, one of which is still anonymous regarding her public comments on social media.

2/x
Many of the comments in question are based in the factual information professed to her by UBC. These facts are rooted in hundreds of years of scientific consensus about the biological reality of the human species.

Tomorrow, the disciplinary hearing for BC nurse Amy Hamm @preta_6 will begin.

She is being forced to undergo a 7 day hearing, for complaints about her advocacy of women’s rights on her personal time. She is not accused of any professional misconduct while performing her duties.
The hearing is being conducted by the provincial regulator for nursing and midwifery.

I have registered to observe the hearing, and will be watching in support of Amy, who, I believe is being bullied and threatened with potential loss of her nursing license for stating truth.
This is what has become of Canada.

I still hold out hope that the regulator, when forced to face facts and evidence in a hearing, might realize its mistake and do the right thing.

As unlikely as that might be, my secondary hope is that this will bring public scrutiny.
