It’s good to see that @NSWLabor have been thinking seriously about gambling reform. There are some great measures in the policy announced today, but there are also some serious shortcomings.
Expanded Mandatory Cashless Gaming Trial: There is still nothing stopping @NSWLabor committing to introducing a mandatory cashless card & informing that decision with pre-launch testing.
Independent panel to oversee/inform trial: Will need to have representation from people with lived experience of gambling harm. Minimal industry representation & no researchers funded in any way by industry.
Banning political donations from Clubs: A welcome position, long overdue!
Introducing pokie cash input limits: $500 is a good start, $100 is better. Should apply to all machines & not just new ones. This is a basic software fix only. Pokies in pubs will each earn on average over $150,000 this year.
Banning all external gaming-related signage: Another welcome position, long overdue. They’re a visual blight across our towns and suburbs & a trigger & danger to people experiencing gambling harm.
Reducing pokie machine numbers: Good @NSWLabor are talking about this, but it doesn’t go far enough. Need to prevent transfer of machines to more disadvantaged LGAs.
$100m harm minimisation fund: Use of the $100m Star fine windfall for facilitating pre-launch testing, machine buy-backs, harm minimisation measures & implementing recommendations from an independent panel is welcome. This should not reimburse pubs/clubs losses due to reforms.
Introduction of Responsible Gambling Officers in venues: Welcome, & in keeping with @WesleyMisison’s joint statement with @UnitedWorkersOz and @_NCOSS_
Facial Recognition Technology: @wesleymission is opposed to FRT as a harm minimisation tool. Mandatory universal cashless card will provide everything necessary to provide effective state-wide self-exclusion system, prevent money laundering & significantly reduce gambling harm.
