Good lord, Elon is now bitching about Soros with his friend Ian who about ten years ago typed the words "Hitler is my fucking idol" and asked someone why their parents hadn't been killed in the Holocaust. Nothing to see here.
Elon Musk owns about 25 times as much wealth as George Soros, and Musk literally owns one of the world's most powerful media outlets. But yes Elon and Ian, it's mostly (((Soros))), of all the world's billionaires, who is trying to control everyone's mind with his wealth, uh huh.
It's long past time to #twexit. I find it hard to believe that people who do this sort of thing can be trusted to take this platform anywhere good.
If my kid's teacher circulated this Soros meme I would pull them out of the class. If the President of my university circulated this Soros meme I'd initiate a faculty vote of no confidence. If a local restaurant owner circulated this meme I would boycott their business.
If those people acknowledged how irresponsible it was for someone in a position of power and authority to do such a thing, then I'd accept that apology and move on. Something tells me Elon's just gonna blow past this one and keep going. Which is why it's time, IMO, to leave.
You know who was obsessed with the idea that George Soros had too much influence over the world? The Tree of Life Synagogue mass murderer and the Buffalo mass murderer. vox.com/2018/11/2/1594…
Who could have seen this coming from a conspiracy addled car manufacturer who decided to buy a media outlet to save the world from “the (((radical left))) mind virus.”
Or from a Know Nothing "centrist" podcaster who does zero research before interviewing white supremacist guests who get to spout their racist nonsense with little informed pushback? [Not referring to this specific guest.]
Not sure I buy the claim that “The interpretation of the American past has not in recent memory been as public or as contentious as it is now.” Ask Black Americans that question in the years before 1990. Ask the women’s historians of the 1970s and 80s that question.
Conservatives went from “OMG can you believe the woke socialists want to cancel Dr. Seuss” to “OMG, reading Dr. Seuss is CRT so we better stop reading it to kids” mighty quick.
To be clear, it's not like the anti-CRT right has some alternative, substantive vision of how kids should be taught about the history of racism and inequality in the US that is being currently squelched. Their goal is just to flood the zone with shit & disrupt our ed system.
The way they do that is with a combination of illiberal legislation like Florida's "Stop Woke Act," but more effective are the mechanisms of informal intimidation and coercion that lead administrators and teachers to just avoid talking about certain subjects for fear of backlash.
Hillsdale College, a Christian private college that produces loads of curricular material for American private and public schools and whose magazine has published defenses of the January 6 insurrection, seems to have a very fair and balanced view of US political history.
Hillsdale is fairly visible in Florida these days.
So Brazil is currently experiencing a right wing insurrection akin to January 6 in the US, and Twitter, that super reliable source of the latest and most accurate information about the world, lists this as their "trending" topics.
Current list of top "News" trends. Super helpful list of things, half of which I have no freaking idea what they even refer to.
Here are the current trends tailored, supposedly, for me...
This is what Elon wants Twitter to be, a place where actual experts like this excellent historian is mercilessly harassed by hateful reactionaries for trying to talk about racism in a nuanced way. There is no reason to expect it will get any better with Elon at the helm.
After a while I just got used to having to spend a significant amount of time blocking threatening or insulting a-holes every time a tweet went viral, esp. one that mentioned race, gender, or sexuality. Sometimes I just set my account to private mode to let the storm die down.
At this point I'm just done with it. Hateful reactionary a-holes have a right to say what they want (but not make death threats, to be clear), but I also have a right to take my attention and content elsewhere. Like Mastodon and Post, for now. #twexit
As I point out in this Post, Elon's transformation of Twitter into a right wing propaganda site (masquerading as a supposedly non-partisan place where "reasonable moderates like Elon" gather) is proceeding rapidly. It's time to get out if you can. post.news/article/2JkXCg…
I don't judge people who make a different decision about this, but to my mind it's just not a fair fight between people wielding only tweets and the person with his hands on the algorithmic dials and is making all of the decisions regarding back end policies, suspensions, etc.
