The strongest hypothesis for a genetically engineered lab #OriginOfCovid is that scientists collected a new SARS-like virus that did not seem dangerous to humans and used this low-risk strain for clear gain-of-function experiments eg inserting a furin cleavage site in its spike.
This plan is literally written in the early 2018 proposal by the Wuhan and US scientists.
They would use "low risk" strains for cleavage site insertion. Nowhere in this section does it say they were going to use close relatives of known human pathogens.

This makes it quite clear that the pandemic virus could have arisen from this research if the Wuhan scientists had embarked on their plan in the year and a half before the detected outbreak.
However, some natural #OriginOfCovid proponents are insisting that these scientists would not have used a low-risk virus but would have used their "poised for human emergence" close relatives to the 2003 SARS outbreak virus.
They're saying that this international team of highly expert virologists collectively agreed it was a good idea to enhance close relatives of a known human pathogen.
These natural #OriginOfCovid proponents have a much less generous opinion of these virologists than I do.
