Ukraine with the help of its Western allies proceeded to unleash the ukronazis, Azov, Aidar, & other nazi Battalions on the people of DPR & LPR. 8 years of torture, murder, disappearances and bombing followed. 15,000 people were killed. Amnesty,UN et al documented the atrocities.
When Russia started it's Special Military Operation on 24 February 2022, it was to rescue the people of DPR and LPR and to denazify Ukraine. It was NOT a US type occupation. Ukraine has been structurally and ideologically nazi since 2014 and ideologically nazi for much longer.
