Catalyzed new private lending for climate by partnering w/Green Guarantee Co. With just $5 M from @USAID, GGC will unlock up to $2B in investment to help countries lower CO2 and adapt to climate change. Need businesses to act more urgently on climate—especially adaptation. 2/7
Gathered tech and govt leaders with @FedorovMykhailo to help Ukraine export the groundbreaking Diia app, which helps ppl do everything from register businesses to get benefits. @USAID worked for years w/Ukraine's govt to develop Diia—now we’re excited to bring it to the world.3/7
Launched new $50m fund that will unlock many times this amount in development impact. The @USAID EDGE fund will help spur private investment and encourage companies to tackle challenges like climate change, trade barriers, deforestation in the Amazon, and global corruption. 4/7
Gathered major agro-businesses to mobilize seeds & fertilizer for Ukraine. As part of @USAID AGRI-Ukraine initiative, @Bayer announced $35m for seed processing inside Ukraine. And today CEO Werner Baumann announced a new contribution: providing seeds to 25k Ukrainian farmers.5/7
Foreign assistance is essential. Many top US allies & trade partners are former aid recipients. I’m in awe of the impact @USAID & our partners have in meeting humanitarian needs & improving health, human rights, education, food security & economic opportunity around the world.6/7
And when we can bring the private sector into development partnerships, we can generate even greater progress. Given the sheer scale of the resources and innovation needed to address challenges like climate, hunger & inequality, the private sector can and must step up. 7/7

The U.S. has responded early & aggressively to try to stave off famine in Somalia. To continue meeting urgent needs, today we're providing an additional $411 million for the people of Somalia, bringing total U.S. assistance to ~$1.3 billion this year. (1/4) A displaced mother and her children walk towards their makes
Today’s announcement comes as the Famine Review Committee released grim new findings for Somalia. While Famine thresholds haven't yet been reached, levels of hunger-related deaths & extreme suffering are staggering. (2/4) ipcinfo.org/fileadmin/user…
But the findings offer a glimmer of hope, as well. Humanitarian aid has delayed the onset of Famine this year in parts of Somalia, mobilized in large part by the US, but the situation is still dire. Right now, 6.7 million people in Somalia face conditions of grave hunger. (3/4)

THREAD: The Black Sea grain deal could be forced to expire next month.

It is essential that this deal—which provides safe passage for Ukrainian food exports—be extended.

These exports are feeding people around the world amid an historic global food crisis.
The deal unlocked millions of tons of desperately needed grain & other foods that would otherwise be stuck in Ukraine.

In two and a half months, over 350 ships have departed to some 36 countries.

Blocking the deal's extension, as Russia has threatened, would harm many people.
Among the people most impacted would be those facing severe food insecurity.

The deal has so far enabled the direct export of more than 1.86 million metric tons of food to countries vulnerable to severe hunger, like Kenya, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Yemen, Ethiopia, and Somalia.

The potential for further widespread atrocities in Northern Ethiopia is alarming.

The staggering human cost of this conflict should shock the world's conscience—and the risk of additional atrocities & loss of life is intensifying, particularly around Shire in the Tigray region.
Recent indiscriminate attacks by the Ethiopian National Defense Forces and Eritrean Defense Forces in Shire, and reports that Eritrean forces may soon take control of civilian population centers, are gravely concerning.

To protect civilians, this offensive must stop.
The conflict has displaced millions of people, and camps for displaced Ethiopians have also fallen under attack. If the ENDF and EDF take control of these camps during this offensive, there is significant risk of further assaults and killings being perpetrated against civilians.

THREAD: After witnessing her inauguration as Colombia’s first Afro-Colombian Vice President, it was an honor to meet with @FranciaMarquezM to discuss how the US & Colombia can work together in the years ahead.

This historic VP's incredible story is one you'll want to know: (1/8)
While VP Márquez's background & accomplishments are well-known in Colombia, her story can inspire many others—especially those questioning whether, amid massive challenges, one person really can make a difference.

@FranciaMarquezM shows why the answer is a resounding yes. (2/8)
Márquez grew up in the small town of La Toma. She & her siblings slept on a dirt floor and faced the pervasive violence of the Colombian conflict that disproportionately impacted Afro-Colombian communities. She became a mom at 16 & left school to work at the local mines. (3/8)

This is a tweet thread on a horrific humanitarian situation that is not getting enough attention: the desperate conditions in territories that Russia has seized in Ukraine: (1/9)
Putin is lying in Russia & globally in depicting Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine as “liberated.” The reality: Russian forces are willfully blocking vital aid from reaching millions of Ukrainians stuck behind Russian lines—exacerbating the suffering of the most vulnerable. (2/9)
Since early June, Russian authorities have refused to re-authorize permissions for humanitarian organizations to operate across lines, which has meant aid workers who once had access now can’t enter. (3/9)
