How the Kikuyu constructed huts & the ceremonies attached to the process are fascinating. From the location, to the kind of wood & thatch used, to the partitions & placements of the different areas within the hut. Thought went into every facet of construction.

#SKB1903
When a man wished to build a hut it was normal to call his pals and relas to help but not before he himself had begun the works. This was known as kwiarukira mwako and until he had he had no right to tumana for assistance. He must demonstrate willingness & ability to do the work
Hut building came with regulations. The builder & those helping him could not do the following during construction;
1. Eat meat sacrificed in connection with a death
2. Touch honey / honey beer
3. Have intercourse with any woman
4. Eat meat of an ox, bull or cow.

The builder
therefore had to initiate most work of cutting down the trees needed & preparing the hut poles himself before he tumanad. This ensured they finished construction asap so that his pals would have to endure these restrictions for a shorter time.
After selecting the Kiea ( site) & before clearing the space, the man had to sprinkle some uncooked millet flour mixed with water ( githambio) as an offering to the ancestors. Saying as he did so " Tuhei mwako mwega" ( give us a good building).
The rest of the mixture was put in
a little gourd ( gitete) and put in a hollow log as building proceeded. The main building had to be accomplished in a single day sufficiently for it to be slept in that first night. A hut once erected could not be left empty even for a night till all ceremonies connected with it
were completed. The first fire was kindled in the new hut the same evening. Huts of those initiated by Kikuyu guild customs kindled their fire by bringing in an ember from a garden fire. Those initiated by Ukabi customs kindled it with fire sticks.

This fire must not go out.
If it did that night before house was finished, furnished & blessed with beer; a ram would be slaughtered by athuuri a kiama & a fresh fire lit ceremonially with fire sticks. A small piece of the ram had to be put in with the kindling as the new fire was lit. More githambio was
sprinkle on the floor as further offering to the spirits. Then a banana was roasted in the new fire and given to a little boy or girl to eat. Following days were spent completing the partitions & putting a platform over the fireplace ( this was to prevent sparks from the fire
flying up to the thatch). When it was complete, the hut owner cut two sticks each of the mutheu & muthakwa trees. Fixing one of each kind into the wall on either side of the door. This was to ward off any evil from befalling him or his family should any of the hut building taboos
have been broken by those who helped him build. Beer brewed after construction was njohi ya kuruguria nyumba ( beer for housewarming), its chief purpose was an offering to the ancestors. Later, the man had to slaughter a ram in the courtyard holding it with its head facing the
entrance to the new hut as he killed it. The meat was cooked in the new hut as further ceremony gukuria nyumba ( to make the house grow up). This was not a sacrifice but a precaution because at any time, a sacrifice might be needed in connection with that hut & the first animal
slaughtered for a new hut & its occupants was meant to be only for meat & fat. Not sacrificial.

Just finished the chapter on villages & homesteads from the Southern Kikuyu Before 1903.

We have a truly amazing ancestry.

Some of my highlights.

Kihingo is not just an affluent neighborhood in Nairoz or a gate. This was the name for fortified villages that secured the
borders and kept the interior villages safe. When the Kikuyu cleared the land for settlement, they initially identified suitable places for these villages before clearance begun. They were usually near the top of a ridge where the ground was level. They would then clear a
large area but leave the tall trees standing with their undergrowth. The other trees around the area were felled outwards, so that they formed a rough fence of tangled branches & tree trunks. The virgin forest beyond this was left untouched for a considerable distance. Any land

Begun reading The Southern Kikuyu before 1903 jana and man, it is so amazing to read about how intentional, purposeful and fair the Kikuyu were in their acquisition of land South of the River Chania. For those North of it in the Forth Hall district ( Mukuruwe wa Gathanga) the
Kikuyu acquired their land by clearing and establishing themselves as first user. This was not so to the South. Where the forests were occupied largely by the Ndorobo. Europeans largely argued the Kikuyu could not have "bought" the land from the Ndorobo because they could easily
have driven them out by their sheer numbers ( might is right, kosokoso). They could not have been further from the truth & I wanna share what I have learnt about those transactions and how they begun with the ceremony of mutual adoption. How utterly cool is that? Lets become one

On November 23rd 1952, eight months after Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne, several hundred Kikuyu gathered in a small market place in Kiruara.
Kiruara was located in the heart of what was then Fort Hall, now Muranga. They had gathered to listen to the prophecies of a young man. Who had claimed to have a vision of the end of colonial rule. This would obviously attract crowds. Who wouldn't want an end to persecution?
Well, several Johnnie's quickly arrived at the scene. Hii maneno ya gathering may have led to organising you see, so they had to disperse them. They did not come along. They had local loyalists in tow.

In addition to conducting thorough and comprehensive investigations in cases of sexual violence we expect the @InteriorKE to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against sexual violence committed by police, other public servants and citizens.

#Justice4SGBVSurvivors @ODPP_KE Image
@InteriorKE Should instruct all police officials to uphold the rights of all survivors of SV who seek their services, & adhere to GOK guidelines on management of sexual violence.

Survivors have a RIGHT to willingly press a charge of rape with the police.

#Justice4SGBVSurvivors
Survivors have a RIGHT to be treated with as much credibility as victims of other crimes.

Police officers play a critical role in tackling sexual violence. Under the law, they have a duty to assist victims to access justice and receive immediate medical attention.

Do survivors feel safe going to the police?

What does the law say?

#Justice4SGBVSurvivors

@InteriorKE
A police officer to whom a report of commission of a sexual offence has been made shall notify a nurse, clinical officer or medical practitioner at any health
facility and refer the survivor accordingly for medical treatment. Sexual Offenses Act, 2012

#Justice4SGBVSurvivors
At the police station, a report is entered into the OB and the survivor is issued with a P3 form free of charge. An OB number is availed to the survivor. If the survivor has not been to the hospital, s/he goes there immediately after reporting.
