This is an excellent explainer regarding that right wing BS "died suddenly" meme that has "spontaneously" showed up all over the place on social media. slate.com/podcasts/what-…
One of the new trustees DeSantis appointed to run New College in Florida is the sort of "free thinker" who fell hook line and sinker for the "died suddenly" meme which, for anyone who understands the basics of epidemiology or biology, is clearly BS. Very academic and rigorous!
It's such a fine line between free thinker, risk taker, trailblazer, and bullshit artist, in't it?
Speaking of which, another person who has given much air to the anti-vaxx bullshit is the owner of this here platform, which has also made it a point to reach out to previously banned Nazis and get them to rejoin the Twitter community. #twexit
You'll be shocked to learn I'm sure that another DeSantis appointee to be a New College trustee used to work for the Discovery Institute, a "think" tank that promotes the teaching of "intelligent design" in American schools. Very empirically-grounded and academically-rigorous!
I think remaking the American higher ed system in line with the world view of right wing propagandists, religious zealots, and the credulous fools who believe them is a great idea and will have absolutely no negative downstream effects on our society or economy!
Just like organizing the teaching of history in our country according to the dictates of the 1776 Project will enable us to ensure that all of our nation's children get a wholesome, 100% pro-American patriotic education and are not brainwashed!
I for one can't wait to be treated by a doctor who did pre-med at DeSantis's iteration of New College where people will be taught to believe that the Covid vaccine kills large numbers of people and doesn't work. Love such "free thinking" doctors!

Because, like Republicans, I believe that running a household’s budget is the same as running a nation, I’ve informed my credit card companies and the bank that holds my mortgage that I’m simply not raising my debt ceiling and will not be paying them. I’m sure this will be fine.
Something needed to be done to rein in my household's spending, so I figured that touching off foreclosure proceedings for which I'll have to hire a lawyer, being hounded by daily calls from debt collectors, and tanking my credit score would be just the spur I needed to shape up!
And if that doesn't work, then being evicted from my house and then having the car I'm living in impounded will surely be just the kick in the pants I need to get my life together!
Something I really admire about Elon is his commitment to amplifying reliable sources on Twitter by interacting with excellent accounts like this.
Disclose TV is basically four anonymous German dudes with so-so English language skills in a trench coat. logically.ai/articles/discl…
One of the most notable things about Elon's Twitter presence is that he looks at proper journalists whose motives are usually just "to get at the truth of what's going on," and he ascribes to them the sinister motivation of "disseminating the woke mind virus." Meanwhile...
Your regular reminder that a consensus arrived at after a long process of deliberation and consideration of multiple viewpoints is not the same thing as "groupthink." As in, the statement that "Covid vaccines are effective" is not "groupthink," it's just a scientific consensus.
And just because something is a consensus, that doesn't mean there won't be some outliers/dissenters. And just because something is a consensus that doesn't mean that there's nothing more to be learned that might shift that current, consensual understanding.
To use an example from US History, to say "slavery caused the Civil War" is a fairly consensual position to take. Some might argue about the role of other causes, or how exactly slavery was causal. But if someone says "the Civil War had zero to do with slavery" that's just wrong.
Elon has clearly stated his disapproval of most "legacy" media outlets and has stated a preference for "citizen journalism" that supposedly is more "moderate" politically and more likely to be "accurate" and not biased. So what media figures has Musk engaged with today?
The first thing to note is that there's no such thing as a "citizen journalist" since everyone (unless they're rich like Elon) has to get paid. So it's not like someone like this who presents as a "freewheeling, independent" journalist doesn't work for someone. What's Rebel news?
Rebel News, it turns out, is often referred to as the Breitbart of Canada. It was founded by a long-time climate denier and has employed white nationalist fascists like Faith Goldy, Lauren Southern, and Tommy Robinson. Not exactly "moderate." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebel_News
So there's this concept in psychology called "projection" that can sometimes be useful in understanding why, for example, someone who paid $44 billion to own a media company is insisting that every other media company wants to control what you know.
There's also this concept (this time from the realm of journalism) called "editorial judgment" which explains how all media outlets are always making decisions about what information gets prioritized and what is worth covering...which is distinct from "censorship."
And there's also a very long history of fascist propagandists depicting themselves as "brave truth tellers" who "the (((controlled))) media" are trying to silence by not platforming their racist and genocidal ideas.
LOL, of course that Republican who shot up the homes of Democrats was a LaRouche fan. Fun fact: the "cultural Marxism" BS meme that is so influential on the right these days (in part) originated in the LaRouche movement.
That early "cultural Marxism" talk was connected to the "Political Correctness" moral panic of the late 80s and early 90s, which was basically "Wokeism" 1.0.
