On January 23th, 1958; there was a movement that overthrew Marcos Pérez Jiménez, a right wing dictator that had ruled Venezuela with an iron fist since 1952. This was celebrated during a lot of time as the beginning of Venezuelan democracy.

Few months after that, Richard Nixon suffered an assassination attempt in Caracas motivated by perceived US support for Perez Jiménez as the USA granted Pérez Jiménez asylum. He never visited Venezuela again
