Fossil fuel companies acting like colonial overlords and getting their opponents persecuted and jailed, the @TotalEnergies #EACOP version. Solidarity with Joss Mugisa and all Ugandan activists against @TotalEnergies . #StopEACOP
This is a pattern, with the Ugandan state, supported by the French government @FrenchEmbassyUg (remember @TotalEnergies is France's largest company!), arresting Ugandans who dare to criticize #EACOP . Activist @BarigyeBob1 is still arrested as well.

Fossil fuel companies, like other extractive industries (mining, timber) have long & consistent histories of killing their opponents, through cold-blood assassination or state-sanctioned executions. Remember Ken Saro-Wiwa and other land/water defenders.

Also: fossil fuel companies are investing HEAVILY in disinformation throughout the African continent. See replies under this @aifeuganda tweet. The fossil fuel disinfo talking point is that Africa *needs* fossil fuels to develop. This is a lie.
Renewable energy worldwide is now cheaper per MWh than fossil fuels, especially in Africa given their favorable geographic situation. Much like the tobacco industry, when polluting and dangerous fossil fuels are pushed out of Europe & the US, they push their products on Africa.

The answer is no, the question itself is due to massive disinformation campaigns.

Fossil fuels will just trap Africa into further (and massively expensive) geopolitical dependence on the multinational companies that extract fossil fuels. And they have long shown they care NOTHING for African lives.
Climate scientists need to pay far more attention to Africa.
Another point: there is another disinfo campaign doing the rounds, targetted more at Asia, Europe and USA, that tech innovation in hydrogen and carbon removal is needed for climate. This is also a lie, these technologies only serve to keep fossil fuel companies in business.
This disinformation goes all the way to the top, see German minister for "education and research" 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
PS: just for clarification: this does not mean that research into carbon removal, hydrogen or fusion should not be pursued. It means these technologies are not necessary or helpful for our IMMEDIATE and URGENT imperative to reduce emissions. We have the tech we need for that: ...
Renewable + storage deployment, efficiency and sufficiency (aka demand reductions for the last two) mean we can shut down fossil fuel industries.
Plant-based diets and stopping deforestation & overfishing mean we can stop massively reduce land & ocean-based emissions.
This is not rocket science, but it does mean having the backbone and determination to put massive, polluting and unhealthy industries out of business (and scrutinizing others for environmental & human rights abuses, i.e. lithium etc).
This course of action is not be compatible with fossil capitalism or fossil-fuelled state economies, but it IS compatible with human well-being and future life on Earth more generally, so buckle up & focus everyone, it's going to be a long and hard fight. Support #StopEACOP .
Meanwhile @TotalEnergies is resorting to straight up lying regarding what the IPCC AR6 WG3 says about the need for stopping fossil fuel extraction. The language is very clear indeed. To stay under 2C, need to shut down planned extraction. The end.

One good action for EU citizens today would be to sign this petition launched by @ysaheb to "put an end to the protection of foreign investment in fossil fuels" (including of course the infamous Energy Charter Treaty).
It will be discussed in parliament.

Excuse me if I take this personally: this is a photograph of my father, a child refugee of the same age as these children, in the home of the family who took him in when he arrived in the USA. He went on to get an education, a family, a life (oh yes and a Nobel Prize in Physics).
This hope and promise and humanity is what the UK Home Office @ukhomeoffice is condemning to the worse extremities of servitude, violence and forced criminality. When these kids are caught dealing drugs, they'll be deported without a question. And all this because the UK govt ...

Reminder: @theAGU , US geophysical association, defended accepting @exxonmobil as recently as 2016. They know climate denial is rife in the extractive-industry-funded geosciences & do nothing about it. But climate scientists with a banner? THAT's too much.

One million dead expected in 2023 due to Chinese govt mismanagement of pandemic. One would hope this would put the "authoritarian govts manage crises better than democracies" argument to rest once and for all, but sadly it probably won't.
Just to be clear: authoritarian mismanagement by Chinese govt is both through:
1. endless coercive measures and lockdowns
2. failing to protect population with known effective vaccines, and by providing reinforced healthcare system for when those lockdowns were lifted.
I received pushback and criticism for several people I normally agree with because I voiced support for the anti-lockdown protests in China. I still stand by that position. The fact is that draconian lockdowns cannot be a longterm solution ...

Ordonnance de classement publiée dans le cas de l'exclusion infondée de mon amie @elisebuckle de son poste d'élue municipale à Nyon. Le rapport est clair: Elise a agit dans l'intérêt légitime des employés de Nyon. Pourquoi a-t-elle été écartée par ses collègues?
Ceux et celles qui restent à la Municipalité n'ont jamais dû expliquer pourquoi ils et elles ont si rapidement, et sans fondement aucun, porté plainte contre une collègue qui est maintenant blanchie par la justice. Qui gagne à Nyon? Qui reste, alors qu'Elise a dû partir?
Il me semble que celle qui a été éjectée sans raison valable était l'élue avec le plus d'intégrité qui tenait le plus au bien être des habitants de Nyon. Et maintenant la population de Nyon est laissée avec l'amertume d'avoir un exécutif qui a sacrifié une des leurs: pourquoi?
