Pipes, yes, but don’t forget urban trees too. 🌳 🌳🌳
Significant urban forest loss is another contributing factor to Auckland’s vulnerability to flood events.
Trees capture a significant proportion of rainfall in the canopy and root systems, either slowing its entry into waterways or returning it to the atmosphere via evapotranspiration. hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/tree…
But in Tāmaki Makaurau, loss of urban forest accelerated significantly since blanket tree protection was removed in 2012. See @AklCouncil & @mc_stanley1: newsroom.co.nz/auckland-centr… >12,879 trees, >61 hectares, lost in Waitematā board area in 10 years, worst in Grey Lynn (ahem!). 👇
Auckland Council’s Climate Action Targeted Rate will help, and there are additional ways to pay for urban #naturebasedsolutions which I discuss here. 👇
Trees aren’t a ‘silver bullet’ for climate adaptation - nothing is! - but a reversal of urban tree loss would at least alleviate the pressure on our storm water systems during events like yesterday’s.
