CCTV's top news story on Jan. 27 consisted of two-year old footage of Xi Jinping visiting a small rural village. In the old video, he points at things. He instructs. He tells them how to be better minorities.
The villagers applaud and he leaves.
Two years later, the village has become a Xi-style Potemkin Village, with a large concrete plaza upon which the happy villagers can dance for CCTV's cameras.
In related news, national minorities from Tibet gather in front of CCTV's cameras to dance with joy.
In other important news, world leaders extend warm wishes to Xi Jinping on the occasion of Chinese New Year!
Cyprus, Sri Lanka and Azerbaijan weigh in.
What does Xi have to do with Chinese New Year?
(It's not as if it's his birthday or coronation day)
In the last two days, CCTV news has devoted considerable air time to anti-police protests in Memphis and other parts of the US. This is a valid news story, but certain problems crop up in CCTV's coverage.
The most obvious problem is hypocrisy. What otherwise might constitute a valid contribution and balanced news coverage by a billion dollar network stands out because CCTV refuses to cover any expression of dissent in China.
Hold up a sheet of blank paper in China?
It's jail-time
Then there's the cherry-picking of events.
All screen shots here are from Xinwen Lianbo, China's domestic news, which serves to instruct the Chinese masses about world events.
Last week's horrific incidents of mass shootings in California were completely absent from CCTV news.
-China in solidarity with protests everywhere*
-China feels for victims of state violence*
-China cares about minorities*
-California incidents involving Chinese not covered
-But CCTV is back on the social justice beat
*except in China
The biggest news spread in today's news comes from Tennessee where CCTV has a reporter on the ground.
The report from Memphis about the footage of the Jan. 6 death of Tyre Nichols tragedy is appropriately harrowing.
No holds barred in showing horrific police violence.
CCTV FOLLIES 1.27 Still carrying water for the Kremlin
-Russian news and views color CCTV coverage
-Russian has power, Putin prowess
-Russia is victim
-Kiev should give up
-US sanctions so unfair!
-NATO root cause of the "situation"
-Bad news from bad countries: US and UK
There is not a lick of China news in today's report. Just two-year old canned video of Xi and pretty stage scenes of holiday cheer around a happy, prosperous nation.
But as the holiday felicity swell recedes, grimy news from outside China gets some air time.
A regular feature of the CCTV's flagship news program is a section devoted to footage from Russia's Ministry of Defense. For months it was introduced by MOD spokesman Igor Konashenkov, but now CCTV just cuts to the chase, inserting Russian footage around the 20'' mark.
-Entire nation is happy; "Red, red, sweet, sweet"
-Important news about the moon
-Latin America gets Belted and Roaded
-Russia prevailing in Bakhmut battle
-World joins Russia in condemning Germany and US
In a bold cold open without the usual praise of Xi, CCTV turns its attention to the moon.
Photos and simulations of the Jade Rabbit rover hopping around the far side of the moon bring to China especially good tidings in the year of the rabbit but why no news of Xi?
Palace coup?
Oh, never mind.
Phew! CCTV had me worried for a minute.
But everything's back to normal with this expansive spread on the most potent rocket fuel of all:
Xi Jinping thought...
-Xi zooms it in to Buenos Aires
-Argentine President Fernandez decries US sanctions
-Looking for leverage in Latin America
-Tibet border troops raise flag flown at Tiananmen
-Salute to workers who work during holidays
-US stokes fires
Just as the day starts with sunrise over Tiananmen,
CCTV news starts with Xi Jinping
Latin American leaders, facing economic headwinds, listen VERY carefully to every word Xi says...
-Xi personality cult back in gear
-Local color in a nation united in festive mode
-Russia gets lots of air time and sympathy
-US is adding oil to the fire in Ukraine
The news opens with:
"Wondering what the Chairman is thinking about?"
(my translation)
According to CCTV's visuals, he's thinking about dancing girls...and they're thinking about him.
They're thinking about the time the humble leader visited their humble village.
