I’ve worked with the #bbcpanorama team, meeting NHS staff with long Covid who say they feel abandoned. Some face going onto half pay, others are worried about losing their jobs. A short 🧵 bbc.co.uk/news/health-64…
Rachel is a nurse. She caught covid in October 2020 and hadn’t been able to work since. She has a long list of long Covid symptoms. So far, she’s been on full pay, but is expecting it to go down to half soon.
At the start of the pandemic, new sick pay rules meant most NHS staff would be paid if they were off with covid. That ended last year, but for many there was a buffer. So some are expecting their pay to go down to half soon.
Panorama has tried to figure out how many NHS staff are off sick with long covid. Only NI and Scotland record this. If their rates hold across the UK, it could mean 5-10,000 staff off with it.
Govt points to guidelines that encourage managers to support long Covid staff back to work, and says the public inquiry will address these issues.
But politicians like @LaylaMoran say there should be immediate compensation
