Here's what happened when I added fetchpriority="high" to our homepage LCP image, a 0.6s improvement (iPhone 6+ / 4G). Gotta be the most literal one-line takeaway I've ever had from a conference talk, thanks @csswizardry!
@csswizardry A few more details. The homepage 'hero' image went from 15th request to 4th. It no longer has an initial low priority, and the request starts immediately after discovery rather than being queued. Requesting early also reduced CLS due to a layout reflow as the image renders.
Side note, the CLS issue began after we added a promotion to the homepage. The data was there, but I didn't spot it - performance budget now in place so I don't miss it again! If only I'd listened to @tameverts and setup budgets after I got back from Amsterdam.
