CCTV FOLLIES: 2.1 Xi wants Putin to win

-Under Xi's command, China state TV favors Russia
-Kremlin gets daily airtime on the top news show
-Russia bombarding Ukraine is regular feature
-Ukraine response inept
-US and NATO root cause
-Supporting Ukraine prolongs the pain Image
For over 300 days running, CCTV yields to the Kremlin, giving it air time on the news show
Russia brags, intimidates, misleads and makes Ukraine's cause look utterly futile
Russia has Ukraine in its sights: missile launches and attack helicopter assaults are common fare. Image
"Russia controls Donbass settlements,
Ukraine hits back at amassed Russian firepower" Image
The Russian Defense Ministry footage is white-washed and one-sided, showing the glory of the launch, but never the terror of the killing. Image
The Russia-supplied footage is almost entirely pyrotechnics: nothing but bombs and blasts everyday, day after day. ImageImage
Russia Defense spokesman Igor Konashenkov used to introduce the bombing segment on a regular basis but now CCTV cuts to the chase, no longer showcasing the stern, unsmiling Russian face so well-known to viewers of CCTV. ImageImage
CCTV upgraded with a brief and desultory "Ukraine fights back" segment a few months ago.

A transparent and unsuccessful effort to be "fair and balanced"

Ukraine troops are uniformly show crouching, hiding or covering their ears from the noise, as in this clip from today's news. ImageImageImage
Ukraine President Zelensky can't get air time on CCTV. Xi Jinping outright ignores him.
Russia's Foreign Minister frequently graces the Chinese evening news with his dour demeanor. Lavrov mostly spews hate, lies and vile, and complains how unfair it is that the US helps Ukraine. Image
In his last bromide, Sergey Lavrov says Russia would be open to a "serious proposal" from the United States "aimed at resolving the current situation" but no such serious proposal is on offer. Image
The Kremlin segment ends with glorious shots of Russian architecture, either the Foreign Ministry building or the Kremlin itself.
-The tone is righteous
-China stands by Russia
-China and Russia are peaceful, principled countries grappling with out-of-control US hegemony Image
Nearly a year on, Russia's invasion of Ukraine has yet to be acknowledged.
The word "war" is not allowed to enter the extensive coverage. Putin is shown as a great statesman.
As if there were any doubts about which way China is leaning, Xi wants a big state visit to Russia Image
The first 12 minutes of the news was all Xi all the time, condensed here for sanity. ImageImageImageImage
CCP semiotics require ritualized obedience.
When the cameras on, it's especially important to show slavish devotion.
Hunger for the leader's unique knowledge manifests itself in ink as top politburo members scribble devotedly as Xi talks and talks, mostly chaff off the cuff. ImageImageImageImage
If that's not enough, CCTV is compelled to devote lavish attention to Mr. Xi's latest magazine article.
He's quite the freelance writer, gets published several times a week. Here we get to see the latest manna from heaven, page by glorious page.
(the cave shot is a nice touch) ImageImageImageImage
As for the rest of the country, there are some exaggerated development reports to deliver.

In short, everything's good and getting better, even in Lanzhou. Image
In a generous gesture to the loyal viewer wearied by so much hard news, some "soft touch" human interest stories.

How about those tires painted to look like a panda?
So cute! Image
And here's a "sweet" story, CCTV sweet. It's about honey of course, and by the time that joke wears off, you're ready for more.
It turns out that not only do minorities like raising honeybees for honey in full costume, but they are very sweet. ImageImageImageImage
Han tourists like to go camping in minority areas to enjoy sweet nature. Image
Of course, no cute and cuddly human interest story would be complete without mention of the victorious 20th party congress and the really powerful report produced by the historic meeting. Image
In international news, CCTV's intrepid Canada-based camera crew found a stylish "anti-war" individual who is against NATO interventions.

(fighter jet on the cap is a nice touch) Image
Not to be outdone, CCTV's London crew found an office emptied by the transit strike. It's a real scoop, artfully composed and deeply felt.

The desk shot, the one with the unattended folders, is especially poignant. ImageImageImage
The world report wraps up with bad weather in Arkansas and the retrieval of a lost radioactive pellet in Australia.
Zai jian! ImageImageImageImage

CCTV FOLLIES 2.2 Birds and Dinosaurs

-Nice news rules the day
-Big story is about birds in wetlands
-Xi conspicuous by absence
-Dinosaurs prove spirit of the 20th
-Dual circulation, fine-tuning economy
-Russia still firing away
-US is a terrible racist country Image
The only really big story today features nicely-composed nature shots, mostly of birds, ostensibly demonstrating China's commitment to wetlands. ImageImageImageImage
It's David Attenborough level wildlife photography, but one wonders why so much of it, and why now?

(In the past hearing baleful anthems on the news meant something happened; in the future it might be something like this) ImageImageImageImage

CCTV FOLLIES 1.30 Springtime of China's youth

-Youth reminded to heed the words of Xi
-Young people listen to the party, follow the party
-Young soldiers dream of a powerful military
-Russian weapons good, Western weapons bad
-Pitiful young people in US face bleak future
The big story today is about how Xi has young people all fired up to dedicate themselves to strictly observe party discipline and follow the command of the "commander"
It's somehow fitting that the lead story, dedicated to the awakening of youth in the springtime of their lives, should be footage actually filmed during spring.

Last April, to be exact.

(Just cause it's recycled doesn't mean it isn't a good top story)

CCTV FOLLIES 1.19 CCTV and American militants

In the last two days, CCTV news has devoted considerable air time to anti-police protests in Memphis and other parts of the US. This is a valid news story, but certain problems crop up in CCTV's coverage.
The most obvious problem is hypocrisy. What otherwise might constitute a valid contribution and balanced news coverage by a billion dollar network stands out because CCTV refuses to cover any expression of dissent in China.

Hold up a sheet of blank paper in China?
It's jail-time
Then there's the cherry-picking of events.

All screen shots here are from Xinwen Lianbo, China's domestic news, which serves to instruct the Chinese masses about world events.

Last week's horrific incidents of mass shootings in California were completely absent from CCTV news.

CCTV FOLLIES 1.28 CHINA CARES

-China in solidarity with protests everywhere*
-China feels for victims of state violence*
-China cares about minorities*

-California incidents involving Chinese not covered
-But CCTV is back on the social justice beat

*except in China
The biggest news spread in today's news comes from Tennessee where CCTV has a reporter on the ground.
The report from Memphis about the footage of the Jan. 6 death of Tyre Nichols tragedy is appropriately harrowing.
No holds barred in showing horrific police violence.

CCTV's top news story on Jan. 27 consisted of two-year old footage of Xi Jinping visiting a small rural village. In the old video, he points at things. He instructs. He tells them how to be better minorities.
The villagers applaud and he leaves.
Two years later, the village has become a Xi-style Potemkin Village, with a large concrete plaza upon which the happy villagers can dance for CCTV's cameras.
In related news, national minorities from Tibet gather in front of CCTV's cameras to dance with joy.
